2016 Summer Beach Essentials

May 29, 2016

A beach bum at heart, I take beach going very seriously. It is an all day affair in my family that sometimes spans weeks at a time depending if we are on vacation – so no messing around with sunburns and toxin exposure. Here is my “mama’s gotta make it all day everyday” nontoxic beach game this summer.

Sunblock – Body

First lets talk sunblock. I really hate slathering on white block, maybe it’s a texture thing, maybe it’s just me but it’s thick, it looks bad, its soooo white, sand gets stuck in it, it’s hard to reapply….and the list goes on.  I’m so excited to bring it with these two products.

First up is E.I.R NYC ‘s Surf Mud Body Oil. LOVE LOVE LOVE that this is an oil. And with zinc oxide as it’s active ingredient it packs 15 SPF. So many great things about an oil. Easy to apply, moisturizing, beautiful and protecting.  This one smells awesome and is reminiscent of those favorite 1980s tanning oils with none of the petroleum-based oil and synthetic fragrance nasties. The ingredient list is short and sweet: organic coconut oil, sweet almond oil, organic olive oil, vitamin E oil, organic St. John’s Wort, cocoa powder, zinc oxide and chamomile essential oil.

Although I am loving this oil for the beach, I wouldn’t reach for it on the daily. It’s a bit oily and does not rub in until dry – not a great combo for wearing with clothes but for the beach it is on hardcore repeat. Reapply every 2 hours for maximum coverage.

Sunblock – Face

Next up is my new wingman Raw Is Everything’s Raspberry Seed Oil. I am so in love with this company. Their oils are unformulated meaning they only contain one ingredient.  And that one ingredient is single sourced meaning they are not buying it though a distributor who procures raspberry seed oil for example from a multitude of sources and will mix and store all procurements of raspberry seed oil together, repackage and distribute. Raw is working with one source for each oil, they know exactly where their product is coming from and how it is extracted. Not only this, their oils are also unrefined, cold-pressed and either organic or wild crafted. This is truly the best of the best.

The most exciting thing about raspberry seed oil is that it intrinsically has between 28-50 broad-spectrum SPF. Goodbye white face, HELLO mind blown! This oil is a medium weight oil and smells mildly of raspberries. You can wear it as your daily moisturizer or use it as a serum underneath your daily moisturizer or oil.  Right now I LOVE layering this under Raw’s Rosehip oil which is a dry moisturizing oil and a perfect weight over the raspberry seed oil – I’m talkin’ PERFECT combo for summertime moisture and protection.

Sunblock – Lips

Hurraw Lip Balm with 15 SPF
4.29

For lips I am totally rocking this bad boy. Hurraw is virtually clear and provides broad-spectrum 15 SPF for lips. Organic, raw, wildcrafted and cold-pressed are the cool kids on the block here. Goes on smooth, moisturizes, protects and heals. Smells like vanilla too – so good.

Physical Barriers

Sunscreen is great but even better are physical barriers like hats, umbrellas, sunglasses and sun shirts. I totally have my eyes on these two little cuties from UV Skinz. Their website states their materials are free from chemicals which are sometimes added to SPF clothes to make them active.  SPF protection can also be obtained from the type of fabric, a tighter knit and darker colors – which is what us nontoxic mamas prefer, protection without the toxins!

I won’t wear this shirt all day but it is great when mama is done getting sun and needs a break but the kids still have 2 hours of battery time left and there is no chance you are leaving when they are happy, running around and don’t need you. Am I right!? This shirt is UPF 50+ (Ultraviolet Protection Factor for clothes which is similar to SPF numbers in sunscreen).

I WILL however wear this cute hat all day though.  I have enough sunspots and hyper-pigmentation from past sun damage. I need all the protection I can get. At UPF 50+ this hat offers 98% protection from the sun. Cute and functional. Thank you.

After Sun Care

Herbivore Botanicals After Sun Body Mist – the perfect way to end the day. We all know that end of the beach day feeling when skin is just a little too hot, a little too salty, a little too worked over – this mist combines aloe, mint, lavender and witch hazel to calm and sooth and repair skin. It feels so good and my kids love it too. Goes on smooth and clean and is super refreshing – no stickiness. Keep this in the fridge for an extra cooling effect.

Top all this off with a cute suit and a pair of sunnies and you are good to go!

Smooches!
