PureSOL – A Nontoxic Konjac Sponge

February 2, 2016

What’s in your sponge?

Conventional sponges can be made of many things including cellulose fiber, plastic polymers and polyurethane.  In addition, chemical softeners and additives like triclosan (a known chemical causing endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity and skin irritation – not to mention banned for use in cosmetics in Canada) are thrown into the mix.  And as if that isn’t enough, sponges are then soaked in a bleach bath to rectify impurities, wrapped in plastic and slapped on sales shelves.

What’s an organic girl to do?  Move over sea sponge and take a back seat loofa, the konjac sponge is the latest and greatest in green beauty and nontoxic living. This sponge not only cleans and exfoliates the skin, it has no chemical additives or synthetics. It is made from the root of a non-GMO konjac plant by steaming the edible fiber. It is a super soft sponge and great for getting every inch of your face or body clean. PureSOL offers three facial sponges, an original, a bamboo charcoal infused sponge for acne-prone skin and a turmeric infused sponge for mature skin. They sent me the original and I tried it with Earth Tu Face’s face wash. It was soft, effective and pretty much a match made in heaven. This face wash also foamed up more when paired with the konjac sponge than just massaging it in with my fingers which I love.

I also tried the turmeric body sponge and wonder how I ever showered without it. It’s a perfect size and foamed up great with the Serenity Farm’s goats milk soap I have been using. Turmeric is an exfoliating agent and can help reduce the signs of aging and the packaging states it is perfect for “mature skin’ – so we all know PurSOL must have read my article on going gray before sending me that one. No more secrets: gray hair and mature skin.

This sponge is a great little tool to add to your green beauty collection. I even loved using the body sponge on my kids too.  A nontoxic alternative to stinky wash clothes that can retain moisture and mold. These come on a string and hang dry with absolutely no smell.

Even better this vegan, cruelty free sponge (and the packaging) are biodegradable and compostable. PureSOL recommends boiling the sponge for 1 minute every 2-3 weeks to sanitize and to replace every 2-3 months.

Just subscribed and excited about your site! I was wondering how long the sponge lasted? I’m looking to get away from my loofah (bacteria farm!) but the sponge is pricey. Worth it if it lasts though.
    Thanks! Surella

Hi Surella! Mine lasted weeks! I ended up tossing it because it got discolored from my mascara and makeup. But even then it didn’t smell. The key is to make sure it hangs dry in between every use.
