Back to Basics Review and More!

back to basics

So it’s pretty safe to say one of my passions is product discovery. I mean let me put it to you this way. When I first learned there were neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and carcinogens (among so much more) in pretty much everything that I was using, sleeping on, wearing and eating I pretty much swore off all products and fell into a DIY black hole. Which in a sense is fine right because no matter what you buy, if you can make it yourself (weather it’s food, or makeup or a bed) it will automatically be cleaner because it will be fresher and void of sealants and preservatives and the like. The X in this equation however is a little thing I like to call TIME! I mean we can’t do it all so we need some clean convenience options we can buy. But what are they and where can we buy them? Well I’ve found a couple of nontoxic options for your home that will make product discovery fun, easy and safe!

Back to Basics

back to basics boxI had the chance to talk with Ashleigh, the founder of Back to Basics and right away I fell in love with her mission and product. Back to Basics is a monthly subscription delivering four full size nontoxic home AND body products for just 29.99/month. Ashleigh started this service because she wanted to make the world aware of how the toxins in most consumer products can affect you and the ones you love. (Sound familiar!?!) It’s a pretty cool service with two options: one subscription for men called Go Green Gent and one for women called Eco Chic Chica. My favorite thing about this subscription is they put a HEAVY focus on education by including info cards on each product. These cards are fantastic and talk about what ingredients to avoid and why plus what to look for when replacing conventional items. For example:

It’s important to dust because some of the most dangerous & health-damaging toxins in your home are found in household dust! The worst culprits are phathalates & PBDEs. They shed off furniture, toys, electronics and carpet to create a toxic dust cocktail.

And then guess what, they include a dust rag by Full Circle that is composed of 100% plant based pulp, dyed with nontoxic dyes and instead of moving dust around it totally picks it up. See the dust on my rag below? That was from our TV! $4.99

This is the March Eco Chic Chica box and it also includes Herbivore’s Blue Tansy Mask, Truce Wood Cleaner and Essential Oxygen Organic Brushing Rinse.

Truce Wood Cleaner: This is the second time I’ve tried Truce’s Wood Cleaner. Love that it comes in a concentrated formula and you fill it to the top with water when it arrives to finish the formula. Less of a carbon foot print on shipping – so good. This has vinegar in it and smells like vinegar but the smell dissipates after use. I’ve only used it to clean my wood dining table but Back To Basics says you can also use it to clean laminate, cabinets, floors, stainless steel and leather. Plus it is free of phthalates, endocrine disruptors, AEPs and synthetic fragrances which are toxins that are prevalent in conventional cleaners.  $7.55

Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse: My husband flipped over this addition. The ingredients are: hydrogen peroxide, deionized water, aloe vera and organic essential oils. What!? So good! Don’t even get me started on what is in most conventional mouth washes. Chlorhexidine which can cause mouth ulcers and respiratory issues. Alcohol which can cause an increased risk of mouth and throat cancers. Synthetic colors, flavor and fragrance including aspartame which has been linked to seizures, migraines and tachycardia. Keep it clean! Your mouth and your mouth wash! $5

Herbivore’s Blue Tansy Mask: This mask uses fruit enzymes, blue tansy and white willow bark (instead of chemicals like retinol or benzoyl peroxide which are cause to a whole host of issues like allergic reactions, respiratory issues, cancer, dryness, blistering and more) to clarify and gently resurface skin. It looks blue in the jar but goes on clear like you can see in the above pic. This mask stays on for about 20 minutes and my face felt cleaner after. $48

Over $65 worth of product for just 29.99 so not only do you get a price discount but you get the benefit of skipping all the leg work vetting products and on top of that you are educating yourself about what to look for when buying in the future. Back to Basics = two TOG thumbs up. Check out the Back to Basics website for more.

Esthoria Box

Esthoria Box Esthoria Box just came out with a healthy living box! They are known for their killer Luxury Green Beauty Box and now they are branching out with a Lifestyle Box. This subscription goes out every two months. I got the chance to try their February box which is available for $29 with a total product value of $60.

Two impression when I first opened this box: there is SO much product here! We see two Mabu multi-use cloths, two Enviro glass straws, two Ola Bamboo toothbrushes, an Ever Bamboo room deodorizer and a nontoxic room spray by Really Great Goods. My second impression was WOW! I will actually use ALL of these things!

esthoria box

Mabu multi-use cloths are made with 100% natural wood pulp and are woven to be naturally resistant to bacteria. Their website has some testing that shows the design to release bacteria when rinsed instead of holding it in the cloth and getting smelly as time goes on. These can be washed in the washing machine and reused. I am loving these for counters and as an all-purpose cloth. $4/ea

The Ever Bamboo Room Deodorizer is proving to be a winner. I can think of a million places for this little gem including the bathroom, my car and my husbands gym bag. So this is made with BAMBOO charcoal which their website says has 10 times more surface area and four times stronger of an absorption rate than regular bamboo. Plus it not only absorbs odors but polluted air particles like formaldehyde, ammonia and benzene too. It lasts for a year and then can be recycled into the earth. Like, who doesn’t need this!? $10

Glass straws: Also we see two Enviro glass straws and a straw cleaner. Love glass straws because unlike stainless you can actually see if they are clean or not. Plus using a reusable straw saves so much plastic waste from entering our landfills and oceans. It’s an easy swap with a huge payoff. $17.99

Bamboo Toothbrushes: We are also getting two Ola Bamboo Toothbrushes. Choosing a biodegradable toothbrush helps reduce more than 4.9 billion plastic toothbrushes that are thrown away every year – ending up again, in our landfills and oceans. This handle is made from a fast growing species of bamboo called Moso which grows naturally without the aid of chemicals and is 100% compostable. Score! Putting these in my guest room! $4.99/ea

Really Great Goods Room Spray: Also included (yes there is more!) is a room spray by Really Great Goods! This went right into my downstairs bathroom. I can’t believe I didn’t have a spray in there -well now I do! The ingredients are distilled water and essential oils. Um, sold. The one shown here is Lav Lime and it smells amazing. Love that it is packaged in glass and the mister is fine enough so it keeps surfaces dry! $16

How great is this! Nontoxic products that you need, shipped to your door every two months for a fraction of their retail cost? Sign me up! You can see more at the Esthoria Box website.

Avocado Mattress

avocado mattress

So going from a 2 bedroom flat to a 5 bedroom house has been….totally FUN and totally stressful (I know you feel so bad for me) – but seriously I need to furnish all these rooms like yesterday! And we are only renting this house for a year so I don’t want to over commit myself to furniture we may not need at our next place. Anyways long story short I grabbed an Avocado mattress for one of our guest rooms. Avocado is a hybrid natural rubber/latex and coil spring mattress. The benefits here run deep:

  • Made from natural Dunlop Latex Rubber, New Zealand wool, organic cotton and recycled steel support coils
  • Made without petroleum-based polyurethane foam
  • Made without toxic chemical flame retardants
  • Made without dangerous pesticides
  • Handcrafted in the USA

This mattress arrived last week. I haven’t slept on it yet (waiting for my husband to travel) but it feels comfortable and seems to offer a ton of support. It runs on the firm side so I got the pillow top option which softens it up a bit but I would still classify this as a firm mattress.

I am so excited to offer my guests a nontoxic place to rest their head! The best thing about Avocado (besides being a cleaner option) is the price.

  • Twin is $959
  • Quinn is $1,399
  • King is $1,500

I will be back with a review on my thoughts after breaking it in but in the meantime if you want to try one for yourself shop Avocado Green Mattress.
