I’m so excited to introduce you all to Who Gives A Crap, a recycled and sustainable toilet paper company on a mission to take toilet paper to the next level. I’m talking user experience, environmentally and philanthropically. But first, the skinny on why we should all give a crap.

Why Choose Eco-Friendly Toiler Paper?

Plainly put, big brand toilet paper takes a toll on our forests and our health. As far as our forests go; we’ve already lost half of our global forest land due to decades of exploitation. And in terms of our health, conventional toilet paper contains:

a bunch of colorful toilet paper rolls stacked next to each other

People can make the argument that toilet paper only touches our skin for a second but the truth is all of these chemicals are being flushed back into our water systems and showing up in our tap.

So what do we do? Give a crap! Buy eco-friendly toilet paper that is made from sustainable materials. Buy toilet paper that is chemical, fragrance, and dye-free. And what might you ask is that? Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Who Gives A Crap.

The Backstory on Who Gives A Crap

On the back of each toilet paper roll there are stats about what makes this paper stand out

Who Gives A Crap was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2012 by Simon Griffiths, Danny Alexander, and Jehan Ratnatunga. Their toilet paper is:

  • 100% recycled toilet paper or 100% bamboo toilet paper (which is sustainable and requires no tending, irrigation or fertilization).
  • No inks, dyes or scents
  • 3 Ply
  • Double length so you get a generous roll
  • Packaged in recyclable cardboard boxes
  • Wrapped in paper instead of plastic (I can hear all my zero-waste readers cheering!)

Pssst… buying bamboo toilet paper is just one simple way that you can go environmentally green! Here are 10 more ways to go green without doing much!

And as amazing as all of that is, it doesn’t stop there! 50% of Who Gives A Crap profits are donated to help build toilets in developing countries. FIFTY PERCENT! To date, they have donated $1.2 MILLION Australian dollars (that’s the equivalent of over $950,000 US dollars) to their charity partners.

Here’s a few quick facts to put in perspective the hugeness of this:

  • 2.3 billion people across the world don’t have access to a toilet.
  • More people in the world have a mobile phone than a toilet.
  • Around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children per day or one child every two minutes.
  • A World Health Organization study in 2012 calculated that for every $1 invested in sanitation, there was an economic return of $5.50 in lower health costs, productivity and fewer premature deaths.

Direct order through Who Gives A Crap, which will ship free on most orders. They currently deliver thousands of boxes every week around Australia but have just started shipping to other countries too.

What’s It Like Using Bamboo Organic Toilet Paper?

As you can see, I was intrigued by Who Gives A Crap from the moment I came across their branding. But tickled pink when my shipment arrived. Check out this box. I live in an apartment with a shared package room and I couldn’t help but crack up thinking about all my neighbors who walked in and were greeted with “You’ve Got A Nice Bum.”

the outside of the shipping box displays the message "you've got a nice bum"

Okay but all joking aside, I was pretty skeptical about the performance and comfort of a recycled TP. I mean let’s be honest, we’ve all tried it and we all miss our Charmin Ultra Soft Triple Roll. I know I’m not alone here. So after unboxing and cooing over the cute (non-plastic) packaging, it was time to get down to business.

I actually had no choice in the matter because pretty much right after that my youngest called me in to wipe his bum – and without delay, round 1 commenced.

What’s Recycled Toilet Paper Like?

First impressions: the roll is SUPER SOFT. I mean, how is that even possible? No idea but I think stunned is where I landed. It’s triple-ply meaning three sheets are layered to form one square which adds to its strength and plushness. And the material itself is pocked making it soft to the touch as well.

Okay so it passed my softness test but my second concern, especially when wiping other people’s bums, is can it hold its ground? I mean, I don’t need any ripping or tearing or disintegrating mid swipe. And #praisebe all went well. I was flush relief and my son was none the wiser so round one? WGAC 1; Others 0

Okay, next was testing the rest of the boys in the family! I’m excited to report that no one noticed or asked about this organic toilet paper. That’s how comparable it is to the mainstream brands! WGAC 2; Others 0

I, myself went in with a bit more of a critical eye, handling it, pulling it and tearing it apart to see how it differed in performance. So here’s my thoughts. It’s (unbelievably) soft, its stays together, it absorbs and it doesn’t leave any pills or particles behind. Too good to be true right!? Wrong. WGAC 3; Others 0

But to be fair, it’s not as thick as Charmin Ultra Soft for example but it’s thick enough to get the job done.

I also have to add, “put away toilet paper” is on my 4-year-old’s chore list and with the big box and the bright packaging, this was the first time he actually volunteered to “do his job” – too cute!

Holy Sheet—It’s Time to Switch to Organic Toilet Paper!

The average American uses over 100 single rolls – about 21,000 sheets – of TP every year. Let’s put our buying power behind a brand that is making a difference!

You can place a one-time order or sign up for their subscription service – a scheduled delivery so you never run out of TP.

Who Gives A Crap is $48 for a box of 48 rolls.

Just when you thought life couldn’t get any better, you discover they have tissue and paper towel too!

The tissue is made from 100% bamboo. 12 boxes cost $16. The paper towel, made from bamboo and sugar cane, is 6 double-length rolls for $16.

Have you tried Who Gives A Crap?

I just got my first box! Did you try the recycled toilet paper or the bamboo one? Wondering which one is softer, do you know? Thanks!

Hi Christina! I got a box of the recycled TP – I didn’t get to try the bamboo one. Which one did you get?
