Jane Hayden Designs and Kali Organic Tampons

April 11, 2016

The day I found out there were toxic chemicals in my tampons was like how *older* people talk about how they knew exactly where they were when JKF died.  I mean maybe that is a little extreme but really, I was standing in Whole Foods and happened to look over and see “organic tampons” and I just knew it really was us against the world.

Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed and treated crops out there. Over 1 billion TONS of pesticides and herbicides are sprayed on US cotton crops every year. Pesticide city ladies!

Pesticide residue may linger in tampons and when used, these pesticides have direct access to your blood stream. Your vagina is one place you want to go chemical free.  The tissue there is more permeable than the rest of your skin making you more venerable to toxins. As the Organic Consumer’s Association points out, “these pesticides can damage the nervous system, lead to cancer or function as hormone disruptors” – and probably a whole mess of other problems too that have not been discovered yet.

Back in the day tampons were bleached with chlorine to make them white. Most companies now use chlorine-free bleaching however a byproduct of this process is dioxin which some studies cite as being unsafe at any level.

Plus most of the cotton in the US is GMO…like pretty much all of it.  Which means more pesticide use, more antibiotic-resistant bacteria and more question marks around health impacts.

It’s so wrong I could go on forever but on to solutions! For more on why to go organic with tampons here are two great articles:

Kali Organic Tampon Subscription

So lets talk Kali Tampons. This is a monthly subscription box that comes with:

  • 14 Kali 100% GOTS Certified Organic Tampons with your choice of absorbency
  • 10 Kali Wipettes
  • A rotating extra either a face mist, a virgin coconut sugar scrub or a lavender bath salt soak

There are some really great things about this subscription.  First, love the certified organic tampons. Second, they are easy to use, absorbency is good and they have a cardboard applicator.  Also love that you will never have to MacGyver a pad out of TP because you ran out of tampons. This subscriptions got you covered. Huge plus.

This company also donates 1.00 from every purchase to The Girl Up movement – a platform that partners with the United Nations to give girl advocates the training, resources and encouragement to harness their passion to stand up, speak up and rise up.

Now one thing to mention – I am loving the organic tampons and most of the rotating extras like the sugar scrub and the bath soak.  I wish Kali had gone the extra mile and made the wipetts and mist a little cleaner.  The mist has Phenoxyethanol and Tetrasodium EDTA in it and the wipes have at least 6 ingredients that rank over a 3 on EWG’s Skin Deep Database. Everyone makes different decisions about what is okay to use and what is not okay to use on their body and in their homes. We all made daily compromises. While these ingredients may be oaky for some, they happen to be a no-no for me.

I wanted to point this out because I think this is a great subscription with an incredible mission and if you do decide to treat yourself, I would suggest requesting the rotating option of your preference.

This box is 25.00/month and includes free shipping. You can check out their website and order here.
