Finding a nontoxic shampoo that works is, well how do I say this; NOT EASY! Read my True Botanicals Nourishing Shampoo review – a true game changer!

Finding a green replacement for my shampoo was a labor of love to say the least. I tried a minimum of ten nontoxic shampoos and while they were not poisoning me, they were also not cleaning my hair. So I was at my wits end thinking I either had to live with greasy hair OR go back to my toxic roots. What is a girl to do!? Well friend, I’ve got the answer…

And it’s called True Botanicals Nourishing Shampoo! This shampoo is not only nontoxic but it actually works. And when I say works, I mean after a wash there is no heaviness, no grime, no grit, no dirty smell. Just pure lightness, bounce, and cleanliness.

The first time I tried this shampoo, I honestly couldn’t believe it. It busted every one of my nontoxic shampoo beliefs. My first qualm with green shampoos is they don’t work. This one does.

My second qualm is they don’t foam up. This one does.

Third, I end up using half the bottle of shampoo to try and get my hair clean because my hair feels dirty and I am doing five rounds of washing. Not economical and I can’t stand raisin fingers. With True Botanicals, I do two rounds of washing and it works like a charm.

How To Wash Your Hair with True Botanicals Shampoo

How you wash your hair makes a difference. There actually is a right way and a wrong way to wash your hair. The key is getting to the scalp. If you are just putting shampoo on top of your hair and rubbing it around, you are still going to be left with a dirty scalp and that grimy feeling will linger.

The best way to wash your hair is to split your hair down the middle and again on the sides, making an “X” pattern in your hair. Then put a small amount of product in those part lines as well as along your hair and neck line. I’m talking one to two pumps in total. Give that a good scrub. Use your fingertips to get to your scalp. Rinse and REPEAT. The first wash is to loosen up the grime. The second wash is to actually clean your scalp. Two rounds is essential.

Also KEY. Don’t add conditioner to your scalp! Add 1-2 pumps of conditioner and apply midway down your hair and work into ends. Do all of your other cleaning and shaving and rinse right before you exit the shower.

I’ve been using this shampoo for over 3 years now and it has TOTALLY changed my hair game. With drugstore nontoxic shampoos, I used to have to wash my hair every day and stretching it would be every other day. After that my hair looked terrible, stringy and just straight up dirty.  Now that I’ve been using True Botanicals Shampoo, I realized I am going an average of three days in-between washings.

I used to use and love their conditioner too but they reformulated it in 2019 and it’s too heavy for me now so I’ve switched to this one and I love it.

A Shampoo That Works With Your Body

Conventional shampoos use ingredients like SLS and other toxic ingredients that strip oils from your hair leaving your hair feeling non-greasy.  This is great except the fact that stripping oils from your face, hair and body actually put your sebaceous glands into overdrive creating more oil to compensate for the oil that was removed.  This approach gives your head a 24/7 open invite to oil slick city, requiring daily washes because you are sporting oily bangs by noon. Do you see the difference? One product actually works with your body and helps it function in optimal oil homeostasis while the other puts your body way out of whack causing the need for over-washing due to over production.

This shampoo is great for all hair types including dry, damaged and color-treated hair. Oh and another super important point – the smell is beautiful. Nothing worse than washing your hair with a wonky smelling shampoo – this one totally jibes with the goal of wanting to feel and smell clean. Nothing over or understated. Just fresh, natural and refined.

The other thing I love about all of True Botanical’s products (besides being MADE SAFE Certified) is that their product packaging and scents are great for guys or girls. Not overly floral or girly feeling and truly great for anyone. I should probably tell my husband that but is it wrong that I’m hoarding it all to myself? No, no it’s not.

Hi Lisa, I’d love to get your additional feedback on this product, as I feel like I might be the only one who doesn’t love it. I was so excited to receive the TB Shampoo and Conditioner in the mail last week. This product really does smell divine, right down to the packaging it all arrived in. The bottles have a nice, simple, clean-lined aluminium design. I loved it. The shampoo itself lathers nicely, although the first time I used it, it felt like I had to shampoo more than once to feel clean (I know that natural shampoos can be like that). I applied a little bit of conditioner on the ends. I dried my hair as usual. At this point, after such high hopes with all the rave reviews, I started to feel disappointed. Right off the bat, my hair looked like “day 2” hair. It felt heavy and limp, like there was too much product in it. Not wanting to be defeated, I washed my hair again, 2 days later, this time leaving off the conditioner, and just shampooing once. Slightly better result, but still not that clean soft feeling I was hoping for. My hair was shiny, but no more than it is with any other shampoo. Still not wanting to be defeated, I washed my hair again another 2 days later. Same drab look and feel. Washed my hair a 4th time, the very next day. Same thing. I am so disappointed. I really and truly wanted to love this product. After all, I spent a lot of money on it, and got hit up for import duties on top of that. I ready so many great reviews online. For me, I guess I’ll keep persevering a little longer, but I don’t know how many washes it’s going to take before I give up. Very sad.

Hi Alison! I totally can relate to your experience. That is the feeling I have had with every other green shampoo I have tried and it’s so deflating! I can tell you this shampoo has totally worked for me and has been a huge game changer. That being said, I know everyones physical chemistry and water profiles are different so I can understand it may not be everyones experience. Do me a fave and try it again but do 2-3 rounds of shampooing splitting your hair down the middle and sides so you are applying the product to your scalp and make sure you give your scalp a good scrub and get a good lather. Nothing crazy – like don’t make yourself bleed – but a good scrub : ) See if that helps! If I go 3-4 days without washing I need to do 3 rounds of shampoo. There is no way around it. That’s just me, my hair is pretty greasy and thick. Let me know if you see a difference! Dirty hair is NOT FAIR!

    Hi Lisa –

I discovered you because I made the decision to go gray a year and a half ago. I do use a “clean” shampoo and have been happy with the product I use however I’ve begun seeing articles that gray hair needs special shampoo. Do you agree with this? Or do you believe it to be a marketing tactic? I’d like to know your thoughts. Thank you!!

Hi Kelly! So glad you are here. Welcome! Okay I personally have been gray for three years and I never needed a special shampoo. UNTIL RECENTLY. Just this past month or so my gray is looking a little…brown/dingy. So I ordered a purple shampoo from Australia to try – it’s the cleanest one I could find. I’m going to see if that helps clarify. But in general, I would say if you are happy with your color then just keep using what you are using 🙂

I bought this shampoo with high hopes, but it didn’t work for me. I suspect it’s the hard water in my area. It left soap scum in my hair most of the times I used it.

Oh bummer! That does not sound like a nice experience at all. Have you tried EVOLVh? That’s my other fave!

Why does it matter if it foams or not… Its not the foam that cleans your hair… -_-

Personal preference for me. I do not like shampoos that don’t foam. They don’t clean my hair as well as the ones that do foam. This is speaking from 100% personal experience and it holds true for me. Foaming shampoos leave my hair cleaner, lighter and more bouncy. Non foaming shampoos leave my hair heavy, greasy and dirty feeling.
