Clean Beauty Trends

Here’s what we’ve been loving lately—call it the dish on our latest beauty crushes. Have you tried any of these?

Bottle of clean fragrance from Abbott

Abbott Fragrance | $28

First thing’s first. I’ll never recommend a fragrance that smells bad. I mean, I don’t care how “clean” it is. If I don’t feel sexy wearing it, it ain’t happening! Enter Abbott fragrances. I opened their Explorer Set featuring a sample of all 8 of their fragrances and I almost died—these fragrances smell so good. Like the REAL THING.

Abbott uses a blend of natural and “safe synthetics” to achieve their fragrance blends. They promise no phthalates and no known carcinogens, which can be two of the major offenders when it comes to synthetic fragrances. The brand also prides itself on using sustainably sourced ingredients and recycled/recyclable packaging to house their cruelty-free, vegan line. They also donate a portion of profits to environmental conservation.

But what really got me was their TRANSPARENCY. I’ve never seen this before in a fragrance line. They actually list ALL of the ingredients for each fragrance they create. Trust me when I say, this is next-level when it comes to perfumery and fragrance. I love what Abbott is doing here. Also, I love how I smell too. Thank you.

jar of Khus+Khus Face potion

KHUS + KHUS The Fix | $84

Obsessed doesn’t even begin to capture how I feel about this face cream. KHUS KHUS’s THE FIX is one of the most intensely nourishing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich, feels-so-amazing face balms out there.

What makes this formula stand out is ITS INCREDIBLE ability to retain skin moisture.

Skin hydration (and locking moisture in) + antioxidants is one of the best things you can do to prevent wrinkle formation (1, 2).

There is nothing better that I’ve used to lock in moisture than THE FIX. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and is super anti-inflammatory/calming too.

And the scent? It’s OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD. I almost fell off my chair when Founder Kristi Blustein told me that what I was smelling was…jasmine?! 🤯 (I hate the smell of jasmine…or at least I thought I did.)

Kristi says, “It’s Jasmine Sambac from India. The flowers are hand picked at 4am so they can capture the aroma. It’s the best jasmine you can buy.”

Welp. Turns out I do like jasmine, I guess. Just really good jasmine. #classicme

Kristi also said that out of her entire line of products, that THE FIX “is my favorite personally.”

  • HOW TO APPLY: Use this as a last step in your skincare routine. AND! Because this is a waterless balm, be sure to apply to damp skin.
  • IS IT FOR ME? This balm is fantastic for most skin types but especially great for dry, oily, sensitive and inflamed (eczema, acne, sun-damaged) skin.

Stick of blush and lip color from Vapour beauty

Vapour Aura Multi Stick | $36

Freshly reformulated (as in these were just re-released this past week!) the Vapour Aura Multi Sticks are back and better than ever.

We love a good multi stick in general for lips, cheeks, and eyes, but we especially love that these are formulated totally without water, making the pigment have a higher payoff. The reformulation is actually back to the product’s original formula—it’s now shea butter-free, which was a factor behind the formula sometimes beading when it got cold (which we dished about before).

This formula also has a longer wear time and more pigment to give you a touch more coverage while still being super buildable.

I’ll take a cream blush over a powder blush any day. Cream blush brings a glow and life to the skin that powder just can’t do. I’m hooked for life!

Box of Biophile explorer tri

biophile Explorer Trio | $110

Nicolle here (👋🏼). I had to jump in to share about what my skin has been LOVING recently. I have stupid sensitive and reactive skin, and it gets angry at the slightest imbalance (weather changes, a new face mask, a too-active product, if my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is flaring up).

But all that changes when I’m using the biophile line of bio-fermented skincare. I’m telling you, my skin has never been this plump, glowing and CLEAR. Like virtually no redness, way fewer breakouts, and an overall radiance that I’m just not used to (in a good way).

I think it’s the unique formulation of these products, which utilizes trademarked Biotic Broths made of microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, algae). These broths are what each of the three products (Root Bionic Refining Essence, Bio-Shroom Rejuvenating Serum, and Bio Barrier Nourishing Oil) are built on.

The trio together is what I think is making my skin the best its ever been—and I do not say that lightly. I especially want to highlight the Bio-Shroom Rejuvenating Serum, an Indie Beauty Award Winner, because it’s maybe the most unique of the three. It’s a gel-serum and its made for stressed-out skin (hi, that’s me), with three types of mushrooms that carry antioxidant and adaptogenic power.

I’ve tried other microbiome-friendly products, and nothing has actually consistently worked for my sensitive skin type. If you’re looking for next-level skincare for your sensitive skin, biophile is IT.

Bottle of green nail polish Dazzle Dry

Dazzle Dry in Vigor | $18

It’s an understatement to say the entire TOG team is smitten with Dazzle Dry. I mean, a cleaner nail polish that lasts 14 days?! How can you not fall in love?!

Did I mention that it also dries in like 5 seconds?! YEAH, IT DOES! Not only are you going to get a longer-lasting mani, but it’s also going to look good from the get-go with no accidental dings, bumps, or creases.

We are kinda obsessed with the green shade Vigor for spring. So cute, right?!

Their 4-piece system is a must and initial investment, but the payoff is worth it. You can thank me later!

Bottle of anti-aging serum from True Botanicals

True Botanicals Chebula Immunity Serum | $90

All a girl wants, all a girl needs…is a serum that gets the job done! True Botanicals’ new Chebula Immunity Serum is a super viscous, gel-like serum that you apply under your face moisturizer. We first fell in love with it because it leaves skin feeling hydrated and boosts that overall glow factor.

But the magic doesn’t stop there. True Botanicals is one of the first to formulate with Chebula, which the TB team explains, “is the most bioactive and powerful antioxidant the skincare world has ever seen and it corrects aging in five ways:

  • Minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles;
  • Evening skin tone;
  • Smoothing roughness;
  • Firming; and
  • Brightening.”

True Botanicals clinical trials’ showed 97% less fine lines and wrinkles after 4 weeks and a reduction in wrinkles by 22% after 6 weeks.

The Immunity Serum, also formulated with elderberry, ginger and echinacea to help fortify the skin. We blew through our samples and are left wanting more!

  • HOW TO APPLY: Cleanse, tone/mist and apply Chebula to damp skin. Finish with your favorite moisturizer. (We like layering it under THE FIX👆)
  • IS IT FOR ME? This formula is specifically designed to treat dryness/dehydration, rough texture, dullness, elasticity, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

Westman Atelier Light Up Highlight Stick | $48

Hello! Loving the new Gucci Westman Atelier Light Up Highlight Sticks in Nectar (a golden peach) and Brûlée (a bronze gold). These highlighters are top of the line and luxe of the luxe when it comes to getting that natural-looking, next-level glow.

A few things that stood right out right from the get-go:

  • The reflective components are SUPER fine and truly illuminate the skin rather than looking like the skin has a highlighter on it—this is rare for illuminators and we’re so on board!
  • The packaging is GORG. The magnetic top and the chubby stick with gold embellishments are just right, right and right.
  • Love the new shades that are a little bit warmer, especially the glassy, bronze-gold of Brûlée, which can also add a flush of color.
  • One of the easiest ways to perk up dull skin.
  • The texture is CREAMY. Westman Atelier describes this as a “gel highlighter” and it really takes on that consistency on the skin, delivering a major glow via tin oxides and also texture.
  • Ingredients look good.

Dubbing this our 2021 spring-time staple!

Lipstick in red color from ILIA beauty

ILIA Color Block Lipstick in Flame | $28

What’s spring without a hot red lipstick?! This shade hits that sweet spot between hot pink, orange and red, and sits just cool enough to freshen up the face and deliver that wow factor with a pop of COLOR.

I think it works strikingly with a bold mascara (like ILIA’s Limitless Lash Mascara) and a warm highlighter (like the Westman Atelier Light Up Highlight Stick in Brûlée). Both shown here.

Lisa wearing ILIA Beauty lipstick in hot-red Flame, and Westman Atelier bronze highlighter in Brulee.

This lipstick wears creamy and moisturizing (read: will not dry out lips) and would benefit from a liner although I am not wearing one here.

Maison Made Face Serum in a bottle

Maison / Made EXTRAIT DE MAISON Face Oil | $165

So excited to be one of the firsts to introduce you to a line I’VE BEEN LOVING: Maison / Made

Maison / Made is the world’s first DEMETER CERTIFIED luxury skincare line. Yeah, I just said biodynamic certified skincare. It’s all happening!!!  👏👏👏

You may have seen some formulas that include Demeter Certified ingredients and there is even one line that has a couple of products that are Demeter Certified—BUT with Maison / Made, you are looking at the first Demeter Certified luxury skincare line AND (!!) they even own their own lab and are a Demeter Certified handler as well. This means they are hands-on every step of the way, with 3rd party verification to back ingredients/manufacturing/traceability, etc.

Maison / Made grows and makes their own plant-infused oils on their biodynamic farm in Burgundy, France. They also work with farms and growers to source specific (and exclusive) biodynamic ingredients. This is really special because essentially they are the only ones with access to these plant-rich ingredients.

Biodynamic farming = more nutrient-rich soil = more nutrient-rich plants. So rich in fact that when their face oil was 3rd party antioxidant potency tested (by ABEL-RAC measurement), the numbers came in off the charts—higher than any other moisturizer the lab had ever seen.

Cultivating and creating this line is such a huge feat and I have been loving these skincare treats on my skin.

Maison / Made feature two lines:

  1. Maison Collection: Featuring a complex blend of oils and botanicals.
  2. Verdant Collection: Featuring single source, single ingredient products.

I blew through the Verdant Collection’s Lavender Hydrosol….it made me weak in the knees, feeling like I was walking through fresh lavender fields. Just instantly calming in both body and mind.

And I’ve also been obsessed with their face oil: EXTRAIT DE MAISON. This oil has been 3rd-party tested and verified to provide protection from environmental stressors such as pollution, UV and blue-light exposure, stress, and seasonal changes.

In terms of viscosity and wearability, it sits in the middle—not too light and not too heavy. Easy to layer. Keeps my skin hydrated and glowy. And smells rich in botanical notes of flowers and green grass.

Somebody stop me…I could go on and on.

Jar of Mukti calming balm

Mukti Calming Cleansing Balm | $52

Beauty Heroes sent me Mukti’s new Cleansing Balm (fragrance-free and specifically formulated for sensitive skin) and I was immediately taken aback by the consistency here. STRIKING.

This formula sits between a gel and a blam, and almost feels like a very thin clear honey or jelly. As a cleanser, it’s incredibly gentle and feels so good on the skin. It’s a boss at taking off makeup and effective as a second cleanse, too. It also milks up and becomes creamy with a touch of water and easily rinses clean off. I love using a warm cloth to make sure it’s all removed.

Formulated with baobab, chia seed, carrot seed and argan oils to nourish and plant oils soothe the skin and boost the feel of elasticity, this cleansing balm exceeds expectations in every single way. Can’t get enough!

What clean beauty trends are you loving right now?

Xo, lisa

Hi Janet! I actually haven’t – but I’ve always wanted to try their Coco Infusion – I imagine it smells like that coconut tanning oil from the 80s #NostalgiaEnsues ; ) Lisa
