Who is Honua?
Honua is a Hawaiian based skincare brand founded by native Kapua Browning. Kapua has studied botanical skincare and is a licensed esthetician/instructor. She and her husband Brandon, a Hawaiian Traditional Medicine practitioner, began crafting customized oils and tinctures for their clients using native Hawaiian botanicals. And in 2016 they introduced the world to Honua.
Honua means “Earth” in Hawaiian. And, to take it one step further, Kapua donates a portion of her profits to three organizations in Hawaii: Āina Provide, Hoa Āina O Mākaha and the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. The latter is an organization advocating for healthy oceans, reefs and wildlife along the shores of Hawaii.
Hero: MALU SPF 30
Dare I say!? This my be my new favorite face sunscreen. Yeah, I said it. I just love how it makes my skin feel! It pumps out white and rubs into clear. It has a lightweight consistency and unlike other face SPFs, it’s not greasy, it doesn’t sit heavy and it actually moisturizes. With zinc as an active ingredient, face SPFs tend to err on the side of being too greasy or too drying and MALU sits pretty at “just right”. And, in fact, it actually behaves like it is drawing moisture in throughout the day – my skin remains plump and hydrated – like how it would feel on a misty and dewy tropical island. I also think it makes my skin feel more soft and supple too. I mean I just can’t say enough about this formula. It wears SO NICELY. More here!
MALU draws on traditional Hawaiian ingredients; hydrating aloe, detoxifying laukahi and repairing noni and marries them into a silky, residue-free and reef safe SPF. In addition, MALU provides SPF 30 using zinc oxide as its active ingredient.
It smells tropical too – like how I imagine one of those big white Hawaiian flowers all the girls wear behind their ears smells. I’m probably way off base but in my mind, this is what I remember those flowers smelling like. Either that, or a little bit like lilies.
The packaging is beautiful too. It comes in a black glass, air-tight pump. I would say the only bummer here is that it’s only 1 oz. I mean, I understand this is industry standard but I am already wishing I had more.
Sidekick MOANA MASK
This is a fun green mask. It’s clay, honey and aloe based and I found I could leave it on as little or as long as I like. It goes on wet and has a cooling effect on the skin. Depending on how thick you layer it, it could look clear on or some thicker areas will remain a light green. I also found this mask won’t fully dry and sits tacky on the skin. It’s designed to give skin some extra love in the summer.
MOANA means “ocean” and this mask delivers some of the ocean’s skin treasures – it’s like a nutrient booster for your face. In particular we see the ingredient LAUKAHI which Honua classifies as a potent skin healing plant used for centuries in traditional medicine, And Limu Ko’a or Hawaiian Spirulina, a blue green algae that Honua explains is high in antioxidants and is known to boost cell regeneration. It also has some other ingredient faves of mine like tamanu, turmeric, macadamia nut oil – not to be outdone but Hawaiian sandalwood hydrosol ya’ll. Mmmmmm.
I had to stir mine when I opened it because some liquid had separated. Comes packaged in a glass jar and smells freshly of florals and clay.
Perfect in time for summer
Love the timing of this discovery. We are getting a high preforming face SPF and a mask designed to treat the effects of summer elements – I mean, what could be better than this!? Did you say a glass straw!? Well you’re in luck! In honor of Honua’s passion for cleaning up the oceans and keeping our reefs safe and Beauty Heroes commitment to using less and loving more, Beauty Heroes is including a branded reusable glass straw.
Plastic straws are really bad for the ocean. We use over 500 million every day in America and these end up in our oceans, polluting the water and killing marine life. If we don’t act now it’s predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. One small thing we can each do is to bring our own straws and decline single-use straws at restaurants and takeout.
