Just Turned 40
Having just turned 40 this year, I know I’m new to the forty-somethings scene but I am a die-hard when it comes to skincare and supporting my skin with what it needs to look it’s best. And if you follow Sarah at all on any of her channels (Selfie Podcast, Instagram, Whoorl), you know she is too.
Peeking Into My Future
These day’s I find myself stealing looks at my mom’s skin. She play’s by the rules. You know; cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream. But she’s never really gone overboard or found pleasure in seeking out results driving skincare.
Growing up she was more of a roll-up-your-skirt to play baseball with the boys, skip rocks, ride horses or kick alongside her mom and dad to pick up practical skills like fixing the toilet or learning how to thread a bobbin – kind of girl.
She’s said on several occasions – I don’t know where you and your sister got all this girly-ness from!? It sure wasn’t me!
Anyways, all of this to say, she has beautiful skin and I am hoping it’s genetic. As those little lines around my eyes get a bit more confident and my skin becomes a little softer, I look forward into this uncharted territory called my forties with trepidation but I look up at my mom with pride. All in all, I’m excited for what’s to come.
In this moment, my main skin concerns are hyperpigmentation, keeping my skin hydrated and working to keep fine lines coming on gradually instead of all at once. There are several ways I address this but today I want to talk about 3 masks that Sarah and I find to be the most supportive for maturing skin. First up? Laurel Whole Plant Berry Enzyme Mask.
Laurel Whole Plant Berry Enzyme Mask
This mask is new to me this year and it’s totally got me thinking Where have you been all my life!? Formulated with just 5 beneficial ingredients, the Honey Berry Enzyme Mask is designed to gently exfoliate and moisturize. And it will knock your ever-loving socks off.
You know when you get a meal that’s just perfect? Like a locally sourced, 100% grass fed beef tenderloin accompanied by cucumber tethered asparagus rounds topped with local edible same-day foraged flowers – all plated on a bed of the smoothest calui/truffle ghee/acorn squash puree – local, organic and handmade? This meal is to the food industry as Laurel is to skincare. Check out the Honey Berry Enzyme Mask full ingredient list: honey, royal jelly, strawberry, blueberry and grapefruit essential oil – all organic.
With maturing skin, one of the number one things you need to keep in mind is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! This will keep cells happy and plump. When cells get dry, they start to shrivel and wrinkle (WRINKLE!!!). The other key is you want to keep skin renewed by routinely removing dead skin cells to help encourage cell turnover. This mask does both of these things and leaves my skin feeling plump, refreshed, hydrated and glowing. How does it do it?
Raw sweet organic strawberries are dense in Vitamin C and high in enzymes and gentle acids which help to exfoliate, lighten and brighten skin tone, scares and hyperpigmentation. At the same time, royal jelly is incredibly hydrating, high in B vitamins and strengthens and firms connective tissue.
To apply, moisten face and hands. Apply 1 tsp or less of HBE Facial Mask to fingertips then glide and massage over damp clean skin. Leave on for 10-30 minutes then rinse. Exfoliating 1x per week is a good rule of thumb – although some people can handle more and some may need less.
Laurel is truly one of a kind. They are a flower and herb based skincare line with the highest possible standards for organic and biodynamic ingredients + raw, unrefined whole plant ingredients. Their sourcing and formulation are truly unparalleled. Like, founder Laurel literally goes to the farms to check on her plants, inquire about crop rotation, plans for harvests…ect. Then she brings the plants back and starts her oil infusions and botanical masterpieces in their studio. Their tagline is “Seed to Bottle” and it’s so true.
Let me put it this way – for anyone with maturing skin, Laurel’s Honey Berry Enzyme Mask is a MUST HAVE! Get it here!
Leahlani’s Mermaid Mask
Leahlani’s Mermaid Mask is green beauty’s Jenny from the block. She’s a real OG, has stood the test of time and everyone loves her. Why? The Mermaid Mask is a superfood green smoothie for your skin. It’s formulated to nourish, clarify, purify, soften and renew.
This is another honey-based mask (honey is sooo good to help hydrate!) and it’s filled to the brim with nutrient dense spirulina, premium chlorella and circulation boosting essential oils.
The Mermaid Mask was just recently reformulated. One of it’s previous versions you just applied straight from the jar but now you take out about 1 tsp, add in a smidge of water and mix in the palm of your hand before applying. Apply and leave on for 5-10 minutes then rinse with cool water. Leahlani recommends using this mask 1-3x a week. I find this new formula to be more vibrant in color and also we are getting more product since we are responsible for adding the liquid back in.
Great for all skin types. Again Sarah and I love Mermaid Mask for aging skin because it’s super clean and brings an instant freshness and an undeniable glow.
Leahlani is a Hawaiian based artisanal skincare line made from fresh Hawaiian nectars, potent and vibrant botanicals actives and luxurious tropical beauty oils. Their small-batch product is blended fresh weekly in their private studio on the lush North Shore of Kauai Island.
P.S. If you are on Instagram, be sure to follow #mermaidmask – it’s kind of a thing.
The Problem Solver
The Problem Solver; hands down one of my all time favorite masks. Pretty much anytime I feel congested or blemish prone (especially around my cycle) I reach for this baby. It’s literally my cure-all for 90% of my skin woes. It’s specifically designed to help people who struggle with severe acne, rosacea, psoriasis and all types of inflammation disorders.
Also, really important to point out that The Problem Solver is a blend of dried clay, spices and vitamin concentrations – and with the addition of nutmeg and cinnamon, it smells like Christmas in a jar. So because it’s dry, there is no need for a preservative which is awesome. Also, it’s a pretty huge jar so it will last you forever. The first time I bought one I split it with my sister. The second time I bought one, I knew without a doubt I would use it all.
I tend to recommend this mask to people who do not have sensitive skin although May has personally messaged me and told me it’s fantastic for sensitive skin so she will support you through this if you want to give it a try – it’s a super active mask and you will feel it working on your skin. It’s kind of a mix between slight warming, tingling and a pulling sensations – but in a good way!
I tend to reserve this mask for when my face feels gunky or inflamed or just gross. This happens to be about 2x a month.
Add 1 tbsp mask to almost 1 tbsp water – mix and apply. (I love using Laurel’s Mask Brush and Bowl Set to mix and apply but any small bowl and mask brush will do). Let sit for 35-40 mins until dry or almost dry and get ready to rid your skin problems. I will never be without this bad boy!
