I’ve got a tickle in my throat this week – call it all the fun I had last weekend with my sister – I mean, YOLO! So to keep this thing tamed and as short as possible I’ve been doing ALL THE THINGS. Especially what I like to call nature’s Tylenol – some sort of garlic/turmeric/ginger/cayenne combo. So with dedication and turmeric in mind, the most wonderful concoction came to me; What if I whipped up a bone broth latte?! So I did. And it was amazing.
Say hello to this dairy free, frothy, complex, filling and TASTY bone broth latte my friends.
The Key Components
Bone Broth – I love making my own bone broth. I tend to cook a whole chicken at least once a week and I either use the bones right away for a broth or I freeze them in these until I have more the following week. Then I dump them all in my Instant Pot, fill with water just enough so that the bones are covered, add 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to help draw goodies out of the bones, set it to “slow cooker” and let it rip for about 5 hours. This gives me a quick, same-day broth that gels. No joke.
But if you want to buy bone broth, that’s totally cool too. I like Kettle & Fire (organic ingredients + 100% grass fed) or Bonafide (certified organic + grass fed) – but if those are too much, try opting for the organic store brand over the non-organic. I know at Whole Foods it’s about $1 more.
We hear the word “inflammation” a lot these days and sometimes it can sound illusive. It’s because most of the time we can’t actually see inflammation, especially if it’s internal, but think of inflammation as a precursor to illness. If we can knock down inflammation our chances of staying healthy are better.
Ginger – If I could have a love affair with ginger I would. Ginger has been reported to possess diverse pharmacological properties. It is effective at treating nausea, is a possible colon cancer-preventing compound, acts as a potent antioxidant in vitro and ex vivo, exerts anti-inflammatory effects and it also appears to reduce cholesterol and improve lipid metabolism (3). I put that *ish on everything.
Pro tip: Keep washed, unpeeled, fresh ginger in the freezer and grate with a microplane (frozen) to add to food and drinks. It keeps longer and fresher this way.
Turmeric – Good news and bad news. I don’t love the taste of turmeric but you can really sneak it into most anything ie. meatballs, spaghetti sauce, tacos, soups…bone broth lattes…which kind of masks the taste. It’s well known known for delivering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects but it can also help aid in the management of metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety and hyperlipidemia (4).
Turmeric alone is poorly absorbed by the body but when paired with black pepper it’s been shown to increase bioavailability by 2000%!!! (4)
So the good news is it’s pretty much a wonder drug, the bad news? IT STAINS. It will stain your cutting boards, counters, hands and cloths. Consider yourself warned friends.
Pro tip: Just like ginger, keep washed, unpeeled, fresh turmeric in the freezer and grate with a microplane as needed.
The secret weapon
So like I mentioned this latte is dairy free but it is also creamy and foams like the dickens. HOW? Blended coconut oil. It’s a beautiful thing. It turns a black coffee into a frothy delight and is the star of the show in this bone broth latte. All of that to say, you can’t leave this ingredient out.
A glass blender is ideal since we are blending a hot beverage. You never really want to heat up plastic before eating out of it. I personally don’t have a glass blender because I choose power over glass and I mostly blend cold. But I do want to note that glass is best as heating plastic can leach toxins into our food like estrogen mimickers for example (5).
I love using an organic coconut oil like this one but by far the cheapest organic one I’ve found is at Trader Joe’s for about $4.
So just add everything into the blender. I add the hot liquid last so it is in the blender for the least amount of time. Then blend for about 10-20 seconds and watch the magic happen.
I’m also going to play with adding some fresh minced garlic and scallions or maybe I’ll go crazy with a sweet/savory combo and add some cinnamon and vanilla.
