Honeybee Gardens 2016 Summer Lipstick Colors

June 2, 2016

Sharing is caring!

In Boston, winter turns to summer in a day.  That day happened last week when it jumped from 55 to 90 degrees overnight. Spring is a thing of the past around here, we know it, we love it, we hate it, it becomes fodder for small talk in April and May and culturally it fortifies solidarity for us New Englanders.  It has been this way my whole life and still, STILL when that 90 degree day hits I am so unprepared. I never seem to have an unexpired sunblock or a pair of shorts that fit right and don’t even get me going on bathing suites.

Well this year my friends summer ensued and I had it in the bag.  Forget about my sandals and my sunblock, I was ready with my summer lip colors and I stepped out like – Boom! I own you summer!!!

And on that note, meet Thoroughbred, South Beach and Masquerade – Honeybee Gardens 2016 spring/summer lipstick line.

_DSC4849Honeybee Gardens just reformulated and these lipsticks are all vegan and gluten-free. Their old formula rated a 2 on EWG and their new formula is not rated yet but their base formula contains no ingredients that rate higher than a 1 and their colorants rate low too (see below). The Huffington Post reports that women will eat around 7 pounds of lipstick in their lifetimes so first of all, that must be true but second of all, if I’m bellying up to a plate of lipsticks they better be nontoxic!

Hello Honeybee Gardens, my kind of glam.

So lets talk performance. I would classify these as layering lipsticks.  They can go on fairly sheer and you can build them up to become more opaque for a truthful representation of the colors shown above. I love this because I can half commit to a color and not worry about it bleeding into my skin, staining my teeth or stealing the show away from my oh so killer conversations.

How does it wear? In the world of lip colors there are several kinds of textures; glossy, sheer, sticky, thick, thin, stains, balms….you get the picture.  The base of these Honeybee Gardens lipsticks are oils, butters and waxes: organic castor seed oil, organic sesame seed oil, organic sunflower seed oil, candelilla wax, organic carnauba wax, organic cocoa seed butter… colors are brought in with mica (EWG 2), titanium dioxide (EWG 1-3: 3 being for airborne titanium dioxide which this is not) and iron oxides (EWG 2). This makes for a super moisturizing lipstick. I would almost say it performs like an heavy hitting colored balm.

That being said be prepared to reapply after meals.  I put Masquerade on in the morning and left for work.  Coffee and lunch happened and I could still see a tinge of color but a reapply was definitely in order.  With no eating or heavy lifting this has a solid 3-4 hour wear time. With coffee and a presentation you are probably looking at more like 2 hours.

On the flip side, my lips stayed moisturized. There is nothing worse than when a lip color fades and you see a cracked, dry, and stained Angelina Jolie lip. I mean I would take her lips any day but really someone give that lady some Waxelene!

My Fave

At first look I was drawn to South Beach but after trying them all on, Throughbread was by far my fave. It complemented my skin tone, eye color, complexion and was beautifully understated.  You can see it here in the pic to the right – cute, right!?

Like I always say, “You can’t judge a lipstick by it’s color!” (I actually just made that up but I’m running with it!)  Because of this, another thing I love about Honeybee Gardens is you can order samples for .50!  You heard me right, FIFTY CENTS! I’m talking eye shadow, blush, foundation and lipstick. This is a great way to try before committing.

The last color I tried was South Beach. Here it is to the left.  Really pretty and summery. I tend to reach for lighter colors because you don’t have to be so precise with the application and a quick reapply is a cinch and doesn’t require a mirror. This shade fits that bill and it has spring/summer written all over it!

Check out these fresh colors for yourself at Honeybee Gardens and tell em I sent ya! If you are looking for more colors check them out on Amazon for cheaper and free Prime shipping!
