Oh *maya* gosh. I am so excited to share January’s Beauty Heroes selection with you guys. Maya Chia Beauty has been one of the most talked about green beauty brands in 2016 and for good reason. I am especially excited Beauty Heroes is featuring Maya Chia because for Christmas I gifted this subscription to my sister-in-law and my Mom (plus one of my best friends signed up too) and I am just over the moon they will all get the chance to discover this brand!
So this month we are seeing a full size Maya Chia The Super Couple face serum valued at $85 and a trial size Waterless Wonder Balm for face, hands, lips and babies…valued at $12. This is a $97 value for just $39 peeps. It doesn’t get much better than this. I am always so excited to write about Beauty Heroes and this is WHY! Value, quality and luxury for just a fraction of the cost.
Okay so let’s start with Maya Chia Beauty. What’s their story? With a masters from Harvard University, owner Susanne Norwitz was knee deep in political and corporate agenda as a speechwriter when she decided to give it all up and go all-in with skincare. This brand came about through a cumulation of influences. Her lifelong interest with the Mayans was sparked by her father who traveled to Guatemala to perform cleft lip surgeries on indigenous people in need. In time she discovered that chia is a staple in Mayan culture holding untold skin benefits. And, as it was meant to be, in 2014 Maya Chia Beauty came to life.
Okay, seriously? I have been using The Super Couple for two weeks now and my skin is radiant, glowing, smooth and BLEMISH FREE. I seriously have not seen my skin look so clear since I was hmm, probably about 9 years old. No joke. Especially when you consider the stress of moving to another state, the kids changing schools and all the logistics that come with this uprooting – this is even more phenomenal.
On the daily, I have been using Max and Me’s Purity & Grace cleansing oil to wash followed by Josh Rosebrook’s Hydrating Accelerator and finishing with Maya Chia’s The Super Couple with The Waterless Wonder Balm as a spot treatment around my lips, nose and in between brows. It’s my current A- Team and I don’t see switching it up anytime soon.
I’ve been thinking for weeks now about how to describe this face serum and I like this analogy the best. You guys know those water bulbs you can insert into potted plants that keep the plant’s soil perfectly hydrated releasing water as needed? It’s kinda like that but for your face. My skin feels balanced and most importantly never dry (and we are talking winter months ladies!) So let’s talk about what makes The Super Couple so unique.
Organic and Patented Ingredients
First of all, chia oil. Chia benefits the skin is so many ways. But not all chia is created equal – you can think of chia like wine. They are not all the same, not even close. Some are extraordinary and some….well, not so much. Maya Chia goes though great lengths to source the best, most pure, stable, effective and potent chia oil on the market. (How about the color of this oil!?)
Here are some of the benefits chia brings:
- Clinically proven to increase skin hydration and reduce water loss
- Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- The richest plant known source of omegas, antioxidants and minerals
Maya Chia uses a patented process to extract the oil called supercritical extraction. This process is gentle, oxygen-free, solvent-free and results in an oil (free of chemicals and impurities) that most resembles its source.
In The Super Couple, Maya Chia takes this chia oil and marries it with Astaxanthin – a super antioxidant carotenoid found in micro algae that’s clinically proven to have 65x the strength of Vitamin C to fight free radicals. Maya Chia sustainably sources this from several small producers. Astaxanthin has been shown to benefit skin health, muscle recovery, healthy blood lipids and support eye fatigue from computer and smart phone screens. Studies are still being done on its health benefits.
Also, not noted on the box but all of Maya Chia’s ingredients are either organic, certified organic or wildcrafted except myrrh – which is sourced from a farmer that she believes is organic but could not verify at this time.
I also clarified with Susanne about the absolutes. So when you see absolutes (even in green beauty) they can be chemically extracted – most likely using a solvent like Hexane. But these absolutes are extracted using an organic alcohol that is Hexane free.
Ingredients: Supercritical Chia (Salvia hispanica) Seed Oil, Haematococcus Pluvialis Algal (Astaxanthin) Extract, Jasminum Grandiflorum (Jasmine) Absolute, Rosa Damascena (Bulgarian Rose) Absolute, Santalum Spicatum (Australian Sandalwood), Aniba Roseodora (Rosewood) Essential Oil, Daucus Carota (Carrot) Seed Essential Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil, Cistus Ladaniferus (Cistus) Essential OIl, Boswelia Carterii (Frankincense) Essential Oil, Myrrah Commiphora Essential oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Roman Chamomile) Flower Essential Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (German Chamomile) Essential Oil
This balm has been a game changer!!! Love this as a spot treatment on my face but also on my hands, cuticles, lips and on my baby’s cheeks. It is thick in consistency and melts into skin. Also love that there is no water in this formula because, like The Super Couple, it does not require a preservative. Nothing but moisturizing oils, butters and botanical extracts. Also organic and/or wildcrafted.
Susanne created this exclusive scent that you can only get through this month’s Beauty Heroes subscription and possibly the Beauty Heroes shop. It is traditionally made in a citrus/orange scent but for Beauty Heroes we get a blend of lavender, vetiver, patchouli, rose, geranium, cardamom and chamomile. It’s super light, really beautiful and just well, perfect.
My hands have been dry and cracked from handling moving boxes, tape, paperwork and just “things” these past few weeks and honestly SO GLAD I have this balm to sooth my overworked skin. It instantly repairs, hydrates and calms. It’s just what the doctor ordered.
Ingredeints: Butyrosperumum Parkii Butter, Salvia Hispanica (Supercritical Chia) Oil, Prunus Armenica (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Beeswax, Tocopherol (Non-GMO Vitamin E), 2% Essential Oils and Botanical Extracts.
A Beauty Heroes Elevation for 2017
If you are a subscriber or have been following Beauty Heroes you know selections come with their signature “hero mask.” This mask has been traded in and traded up for these keepable #Herogram cards. These cards will share little pieces of the bigger vision to buy, spend and use less while loving more.
Unlike the masks, these cards are printed on New Leaf Paper which saves millions of gallons of water, preserves trees, saves energy and spares the air of greenhouse gases. Plus they process each sheet – chlorine free. It’s the creme de la creme of the recycled/sustainable paper world.
Save these for your inspiration board, your mirror, the side of your fridge or a journal. Stay inspired and appreciate Beauty Heroes’ “use less, love more” philosophy.
