Organic City Guide

Organic City Guide

Traveling and want to know the best organic places to eat!? Me too! These haunts are the best of the best in organic dining and I am so excited to share them with you. As buzz words continue to drive business there are more and more restaurants claiming to be “local” “natural” “sustainable” or “organic” but the proof is in the ingredients and sourcing and my standards do not waiver. Choosing only the best of the best to list here so if you are in any of these cities make sure to hit these up! Also, if you have a suggestion please send it along, I am always looking for the next and the best!

Also, I’ve teamed up with my girl Suzi at Gurl Gone Green to build out this list. Suzi is a real OG (organic girl) and her standards are as sharp, if not sharper, than mine and she’s calling out some must-try organic joints too. Check out her list at Gurl Gone Green which includes Seattle, LA, Denver and more. I’ll also link them here too.

This is a live list that I will continue to update as I explore my new home in Atlanta and travel the states. On the calendar this year: LA, NYC, Boston, Philly, Boulder/Denver and more!

Asheville, NC

Owl Bakery – They had GF seed bread here that was really amazing. Got that with an egg scramble with gruyere and sliced avocado. I would definitely go back here.

Biscuit Head – Not necessarily organic but they have a pretty good gluten-free biscuit if you have a hankering. My husband and kids loved this place and there was a line out the door on Sunday morning. Didn’t eat again until dinner.

Curate – Spanish tappas like you’ve never seen them before. Every bite was better than the next. Loved their house-made blood sausage. No focus on organics but they did have some sustainably sourced, wild items on their menu.

Hayward Commons – Seasonal fare with a handwritten board of where items are sourced from daily – love that. I got their scallops which were way undercooked. But their GF loaded tots…..need I say more!? Gluten-free LOADED TOTS.

Other reader suggestions: Over Easy Cafe, White Labs for 72 hour ferment on their pizza dough, BimBeriBon, Taco Billy (GF plantain tortillas!), PLANT, Posana (100% gluten-free), Duck Taco, Sunny Point Cafe, Nine Mile, Green Sage, Chai Pani

Dtox Juice – 100% organic + cold-pressed smoothies and juices. House made nut-milks including a killer Brazil Nut Milk. Hands down, the thickest smoothie in Atlanta. Acai Smoothie is my fave!

Yeah Burger – A great place for kids and adults – dine in or order out. Organic to the max + gluten-free and vegan options and the best kids menu around. Get the grassfed bison burger with bacon and fig jam in a collard wrap and a side of the crazy cauliflower. TDF. (To die for!)

Up Beet – Salads, grain bowls, smoothies, acai bowls and toast. Most everything is organic and gluten free including their LONG list of house made dressings (Thai peanut…curry coconut…cashew lime..). I love their Guac It Out bowl.

True Food Kitchen – Full restaurant. Caters to almost every food preference including gluten-free, organic, vegetarian and vegan. Organic booze/wine. Dang delicious. Try their kale pesto and Ginger Margarita!

Bamboo – a FREE delivery service bringing cold-pressed, certified organic, raw juices and almond milks right to your door. Fantastic to call ahead and have them ready for you at the hotel! Get the lemon, ginger + green apple. Next I want to try their Almond Reishi Mushroom Coffee. Ah-mazing!

Cafe West Express – House made soups + broths, next level plant-based burgers and air fried potatoes with house made veggie ketchup. Their vegan turmeric Caesar is a must try. And you gotta get their strawberry beet shake that puts a McD shake to shame. 95% organic.

XOCOLATL – Small batch chocolate micro-factory at Krog Street Market. Single source cacao + dairy free chocolate bars. Order online but if you can get to Krog St. Market you have to try their frozen drinking chocolate with coconut cream whip. NEXT LEVEL!

Flower Child – Love their Glow Bowl!

Floataway Cafe: A sister restaurant to Bacchanalia with a parallel philosophy. I haven’t eaten here yet either but it’s on my list!

Karma Farm: Just opened early 2019 and it’s Atlanta’s first certified gluten free restaurant and bakery! (Actually it’s the first in the US!) My faves are the brisket, spicy noodles, dinner rolls, Asian chicken slaw and the juices. Committed to organics (they will never serve conventional dirty dozen) and free of some of the top allergens like gluten + nuts.

Cultured South: Kombucha tap room and market place. Local + organic. AND they have a delicious dairy-free cheese plate. AND a dairy-free, mostly organic cashew gelato booch floats. You’re welcome!

Cultivate Foods: Um. Organic and local is where it’s at at Cultivate with a heavy focus on gluten free options. I’m talking GF fried goat cheese, Eggs Benedict, french toast….the works. They also have a beet latte.

StapleHouse: Good luck if you can get a reservation here. This nonprofit restaurant supports the restaurant community, you can read more about their story here. All locally sourced including their foraged flowers and edibles with the exception of the occasional Halibut they may fly in. Organic, local, sustainable, delicious. Everything done right. Show up at 5pm and wait at the garage door to try and get a seat at the 8 seat bar – first come first serve. Dairy-free + gluten-free friendly. The beef tartar is the best I’ve ever had.

BACCHANALIA: I haven’t eaten here yet but I can’t wait! Maybe Valentines Day 2018!? A four course prefixed menu. Here is a quote from their website: “Bacchanalia’s seasonal menu relies entirely on organic ingredients, many sourced from the [owners] farm.”

Miller Union: Preparing food according to the season, Miller Union sources local, clean meats + veg – always sustainable and mostly organic. They also pay to recycle (because Atlanta doesn’t recycle) and they also run their own compost and compost most everything. Plus they have a beautiful selection of organic and biodynamic wines. This place is the real deal.

Organic Wine Bars:

Atlas Wine Bar: Pours several options for organic and biodynamic wines. Read my interview with Sommelier Sam Gamble here.

Hazel Janes Wine Bar: Dedicated to serving over 100 organic and biodynamic wines. Opening March 2019!

Life Alive: A reader just sent me this one and I’M SIKED to try it out next time I’m in town! Looks AMAZING.

Nourish Your Soul: Cold-pressed juice bar with superfood snacks. Prioritizes organic and local but is not 100%. Drooling over their list of vegan milks!

Pressed Juicery: Is coming to Boston with TWO locations. This joint is NOT ORGANIC, not even a little, I almost didn’t include it but I think it’s worth a mention for their signature Freeze. A dairy-free “soft-serve” made from fruits, nuts and vegtables. No sugar added! Get the Freeze. Duh.

FoMu: Handmade dairy-free, plant-based ice cream that has gluten-free, nut-free and soy-free options. You have to try their Coconut/Avocado smoothie!

Farmstead Table: Breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. 95% organic and everything is locally sourced (with exception of their meat which is from Pensilvania because it is cleaner than what they could find locally). Go with the fish of the day – shipped in from Gloucester, MA EVERY morning!

Alden & Harlowe: Hit this place up for dinner and you won’t be sorry. If taste was the only criteria this place would be #1.  Locally sourced meats and veg – organic when they can. The beef is grassfed and non-GMO grain finished. Organic and biodynamic wines available. Get the brussels and the smoked trout.

  • Follain: Nontoxic makeup and beauty at its BEST! This place is like the promised land with two locations in Boston. Get the Josh Rosebrook Hairspray and the Axiology lipstick!

Living Kitchen: Their tagline is “Always organic and 100% plant based”, yeah, count me in! Breakfast, lunch and dinner. DAILY, house made nut milks. Organic coffee/espresso, juices and smoothies. I haven’t eaten here yet but have this place on strong recommendation from Molly and Sam and I can see why!

The Harbinger: Locally sourced and seasonal breakfast and lunch fare plus house made baked goods with both plant-based and gluten-free options. Their signature breakfast sandwich is killer. Also couldn’t leave with out buying 3 of these which they stock as a house staple.

Basic Kitchen: Next on my list!

The Water Room: Nontoxic nail salon

Flower Child: This is a chain but worth hitting up for sure. The Dirty Dozen is always organic. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.  The Thai Cashew Quinoa bowl is a must!
