3 Organic Deodorants to try in 2020

February 12, 2020 (updated May 3, 2023) — Written by

Remember back in the day when “organic deodorant” or “natural deodorant” meant rubbing a crystal around in your pit? Or shaking out some baking soda, awkwardly hand-patting it on, and crossing your fingers? Well gone are the days of “apply and pray” friends. Organic deodorant is making a name for itself in 2020. Here are three options that will have you raising your hand like you are sure in no time. (Anyone?)

I’m using the term “organic deodorant” here but only because there is no universal term for what I’m talking about. Natural deodorant, nontoxic deodorant, clean deodorant, green deodorant….this all falls under the same umbrella for the purpose of this article. I’m using “organic” as a principle word here but remember the FDA does not define or regulate the term“organic,” as it applies to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products. “USDA certified organic” as a verification process applies to agriculture only. And because “organic deodorants” rely heavily on non-agricultural ingredients like baking soda, it becomes really tough to get a deodorant USDA certified organic. Although they do exist, like this one for example, but they are not the norm.

And if you are like, HOLD UP. Are you saying there is something wrong with my Degree Clinical Protection? Girl. That’s exactly what I’m saying. More here on why it’s important to choose organic/clean/natural/nontoxic when it comes to deodorant.

Okay, so many great options now for organic deodorants. So the question is no longer, “What are some clean deodorants?” The question becomes, “What’s new and what’s going to work for me?” Here are three personal standouts for me in 2020. Each brings something unique to the table. AND I’ve scored you a couple exclusive coupon codes to save too if you decide to try. Keep scrolling.

Ursa Major Sublime Sage Spray Deodorant

If there is one new deodorant to try this year it’s Ursa Major’s Sublime Sage Spray Deodorant. The unique selling point here is; this is a spray and it works. Now don’t get it twisted, there are definitely other spray deodorants on the clean personal care scene. I’ve tried my share. But for me they just haven’t been able to get the job done. Maybe you’ve had the same experience?

Well Sublime Sage Spray steps up to the plate and hits a home run every time. Both me and my husband have been testing it for over a month and there have been zero breakthrough incidents. Gym? Check. Florida? Check. All day long? CHECK.

The other earth shattering benefit to this deodorant is THERE IS NO RESIDUE. It sprays on and evaporates and that’s it! Up until this moment I stopped wearing deodorant on the days I wore a black tank or a LBD or any sort of dark top with exposed underarms. I mean, it’s just not worth it to me to have white lines down my shirt or clumps of product around my pits. So for those rare occasions, I just skipped deodorant. WELL FRIENDS! Not any more! This spray gets it done, residue free. It’s even got me feeling like it wont stain white t-shirts too. Can anyone confirm?!

The scent profile is sage, geranium, sandalwood and lemon myrtle but mostly it registers as lemon grass to me.

It’s also fantastic for people with under arm hair. This is a clean and fuss-free application. And at 1.79 oz, I also love the travel (TSA-friendly) sizing too.

And last, but not least, it’s clean using plants, minerals and enzymes to keep pits funk-free! Vegan, gluten free and cruelty free.

Two areas of concern for me. First, Ursa Major Sublime Sage Deodorant Spray is packaged in plastic – I know I’m asking for a lot but it would be super chic and earth-friendly in glass, wouldn’t it? And second, without baking soda or arrowroot in this formula, there is nothing to prime pits from rubbing against themselves. This has not been a problem for me. No rashes, no irritation, nothing. It just lacks that semi-dry feeling you may experience from baking soda or arrowroot for example.

Madam Lemy

Okay so, I have to be honest, Madam Lemy had me at powder puff. Yeah, I just said powder puff. How badly do you all of a sudden want this on your vanity. I know, like, STAT.

Madam Lemy is a pleasure to use. Pit’s feel unheard-of-in-the-clean-beauty-world immediately DRY and so soft at application. The dryness wears away overtime but the formula stays true all day. We see a super simple ingredient list in this cruelty-free, vegan, gluten free formula:

Full ingredient list: Himalayan Salt, Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot), Rose Petal Powder, Rose Flower Oil, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit (Vanilla)

That’s it! Comes in 4 scents: rose, lavender, lime and lemon. I got to try the lime and I love it but to be frank, I have my eyes all over the rose.

A huge additional pro here is Madame Lemy sells refills so you can reuse the original, plastic-free container. I also feel like there is a ton of product here. Madame Lemy said each container or refillable will last about 2 months.

Some areas of concern: When I first opened this product, there was powder all over the place. If this happens to you, don’t fret. Take the puffer out, remove the paper that separates the puff from the sieve barrier and it’s good as new. The powder puff element is so nice and it’s actually the perfect shape but the irrational part of me wishes it was the size of a dinner plate.

TAOS AER Deodorant

Okay if you tried the Vapour AER Deodorant when it first launched in September 2017…keep reading because it’s gone through a few changes.

Taos AER is a new sister brand of Indie Lee. And what was formerly known as Vapour AER Deodorant is now its own standalone clean personal care brand — Taos AER — recently launched in mid-October 2019.

Taos AER was inspired by the natural beauty, wild spirit, and health-conscious lifestyle of our birthplace, Taos, New Mexico. Their first product, Next-Level Clean Deodorant, is a revamped version of the former AER Deodorant. The formula has been updated and the packaging has been redesigned for enhanced performance and product stability.

I tried the original AER when it was first launched and although I loved the consistency and easy-as-pie applicator, the formula didn’t work consistently for me. It would work for a week and then stop working for a day or two.

But this revamped formula works. It’s the same gel-to-powder finish however the texture is smoother with a quicker dry down than before and all around more effective than it’s first edition.

Available in three scents: Lavender Myrrh, Ginger Grapefruit and Palo Santo Blood Orange. I’ve tried them all a couple of times over and Ginger Grapefruit has my heart all the way. Refreshing, light and invigorating.

And incase you are asking, the packaging is designed to be 100-percent curbside recyclable. This formula is also cruelty-free. It does contain sustainably sourced organic beeswax so it is not vegan. And, although it does not contain any gluten, it’s processed in a facility that also processes wheat products.

Concerns: At this time, TAOS AER is only available in a travel size but the full size will be back in stock soon. Also, the dial turner that pushes product out can take a little elbow grease to turn sometimes but overall I felt like I was able to get to all the product.

What deodorant are you loving in 2020?

Routine! You introduced it to me last year and I’ve been a concert ever since. I can buy refills locally so it’s even better – I get to reduce waste and support a local business. Might have to try some of these though!

Yes! I am in Maine – I couldn’t believe it when I went online to buy and noticed that a local refill store carried it. It’s fantastic!! (Also, original comment should have said I am a CONVERT). I also keep stock of EO spray, it works really well post workout.

Girl, you are making me want to buy more deodorant! How is that even a thing?! I have been using Agent Nateur and have had the best lucky with it out of all I’ve tried, but I do wish the formula felt a little drier. Might end up trying a the Madame Levy and the Taos AER to see how they compare.
