I consider myself to be dedicated to green living. I have a reusable water bottle, glass food containers, aluminum-free deodorant, reusable straws, reusable menstrual products….THE WORKS. That being said, there are not many green-living products that surprise me (outside of reusable cotton swabs, silicone chest masks and mouth taping). Okay so I take it back, I’m still constantly surprised and impressed with green-living innovation. The latest? 100% plastic-free dishwashing soap.

How does nontoxic dish soap work?

It’s basically a 7 oz bar of soap in the shape of a small candle that comes in a recyclable/compostable box. That’s it. Included, I also received a Cedar soap dish for tidy keeping.

You take the Cedar soap saver, place it by your sink and put the soap bar on top of it. Then when you are ready to do your dishes, you can use the dish soap in two ways.

  1. You can rub your sponge, cloth or dish brush on the bar of soap and then wash dishes per usual.
  2. You can hold the bar of soap under running water while filling the sink, pots and/or pans to create a body of soapy water.

*You can also use it for hand soap too!

Comparing nontoxic dish soap ingredients with leading brands

Okay, you know this wouldn’t be a This Organic Girl post without a peek at the ingredients. Let’s compare Meliora plastic free dish soap to Dawn dish soap and see what shakes out.

Dish soap label reading…

Okay, I know looking at ingredients can be intimidating but without even knowing anything about anything….you can look at both decks and probably guess which one is cleaner – and you would be right. Reading labels does not have to be over complicated. Sometimes it can be as easy as trusting your gut.

But for a little more intel, in Dawn we see concerning ingredients like “fragrance” and “biodegradable surfactants”. I call these category materials and the issue here is non-disclosure. We don’t know what exactly is in “fragrance” or “surfactants” and this is NOT an honest way to list ingredients which is a problem for me. You can check out 12 additional hidden ingredients in skincare and makeup here.

RELATED: Hidden Ingredients in Skincare and Makeup

Outside of non-disclosure issues, we are seeing several other concerning ingredients. One being, Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Sodium Laureth Sulfate adds carcinogens 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide to fatty alcohols to turn them into emulsifiers or surfactants. Since these carcinogens readily absorb into the body through skin, Canada, Qatar, and NY State have banned cosmetics containing them including ingredients like Laureth-23, SLS, and Polysorbate 80 (Begum et al. 2016, Farajzadeh et al. 2016, Zhou et al. 2019, Black et al. 2001).

Not only is something like Meliora the better choice for your body, with it’s biodegradable and plastic-free packaging, it’s also the better choice for the planet too.
