Sigil Scent Review: A Nontoxic Fragrance

April 28, 2016 (updated February 2, 2023) — Written by

It’s like searching for the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, a four-leaf clover or the Loch Ness Monster—a clean, nontoxic fragrance that lasts—you ain’t gonna find it… Until now that is! Here is my honest Sigil Scent review.

Meet Sigil Scent

Sigil has four bold fragrances and a room spray that offer up some serious competition in the green beauty realm. Read on for my Sigil Scent review.

Sigil sent me Ground to try and I immediately fell in love. I consider myself a go-getter, type A, super motivated, competitive type of person.

Therefore, I love bold, to the point, complex, well rounded, confident fragrances with a touch of softness and Ground had my number from the first sniff.

I put it on for work in the morning and I fell in love all over again three hours later when I could still smell it! Not to mention a light trace of fragrance still remained a the end of the work day.

Let me say that again incase you missed it—it lasted ALL DAY!

How Sigil is a Nontoxic Fragrance

My first thought was there is no way this could actually be a nontoxic product. It preforms way too high. But here’s why.

Sigil Scent uses organic and wildcrafted essential oils with a base of organic corn alcohol.

Their organic corn alcohol comes from a small distillery in the Pacific Northwest. They buy it by the gallon to maintain freshness.

And this is pure alcohol as opposed to denatured alcohol which has toxic additives.

Staying power comes from two things. They balance each blend with at least one “fixative” quality oil (e.g. oakmoss, blue cypress, amyris….). And they blend in concentration on the high (but safe) side.

For Eau de Parfum approximately 20% “juice” and the rest alcohol and water. This is above industry standard but not so much that it creates volatility in the blend. This creates the boldness and “throw” and also contributes to the long wear of Sigil Scents.

And a little goes a long way so the full size bottle will last the better part of a year.

Sigil has four scents and a room spray.  I tried all four scents and Ground was by far my favorite. Here is a quick round-up of my impressions.

OPEN

Sigil’s description is amazing: “Ice-chilled gimlets, tangy-treacle ginger chews, full lung breathing and key lime tarts.” How good does that sound?!

I am not as keen on olfactory descriptions. I definitely picked up on all of these notes but if I had to pick a few words I would say slightly musky, pastels, wintergreen.

FOCUS

“Coffee at sunrise, Mother’s herb garden and thousands of orange blossoms – vibrant, susurrating, breathing.” Again, killer description. I smell citrus, pine and rose with smoky wood undertones.

BALANCE

“Sweetly astringent wild meadows, floating with fingertips tingling over blades of grass, singed flowers and dried tobacco.” So enticing! This one to me smelled really lemony with sweet minty undertones.

GROUND

My fave and I also found this one to have the longest staying power of all four—on me at least. I know everyone’s chemistry is different.

“Ancient forests, meditative states, damp moss between toes, and blood orange bourbons.”

BOOM. Who doesn’t want that?!

Sigil does not believe in a binary view of male/female scents which I totally respect and adore. However, for the sake of description, I would say this leans more toward the masculine end of the spectrum. Musky, woodsy and earthy with a barley notable sweetness. Calming.

Sigil Scent is vegan and never tested on animals. It is packaged in a violet glass spray bottle and is recommended to store at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

Also recommended to shake lightly before use to avoid naturally occurring separation.

Sigil says, “Each scent tells a story; an intention, a moment alone in nature, to be remembered with every application.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Everyone has something different they are looking for in a scent. If you are looking for something nontoxic with some serious staying power—look no further—Sigil’s got you covered.

Can you please do an updated perfume recommendation? I’ve been looking for my “signature scent” and am having a hard time finding a clean perfume that smells as expensive as it actually is. They all seem to fade down to one note and remind me of Designer Imposters from middle school 😉
