So it’s the 1st of the month and we all know that means two things: Beauty Heroes drops + rent’s due. It’s a yin yang we can’t deny – so if you have any money left over after cutting your rent check, gurrrrlll, you know what to do; You. Better. Work. And by work I mean, get in on the new Beauty Heroes deal. Right now we are paying two rents because we couldn’t get out of the lease from the break-in house so believe me, I truly appreciate that this gift comes at the perfect time to soften that blow. ANYWAYS! Enough chit chat, let’s get on with my Skin Owl + Beauty Heroes review!
This month we are being treated to hero product Skin Owl’s Beauty Drops PM, Maqui Berry, $85 and sidekick Beauty Whip Maqui Berry Face Mask, $28. This is a total value of $113 and members get it all for less than $39. Crazy right?! Beauty Heroes is by far, one of the best deals on the green beauty block. They send out monthly discoveries from heavy hitting CLEAN beauty brands like Josh Rosebrook, Mahalo, Kahina Giving Beauty, Max and Me and more. Every month is valued around $100, sometimes more (I’ve seen as high as $185) and sometimes less (I’ve seen as low as $72). But it’s a great way to discover new brands without breaking the bank because you almost always get at least double in value what you pay. Check out my Beauty Heroes subscription review for more on how this service works and a list of past discoveries.
One of my favorite things about this month is the timing. It’s been a couple of months since Beauty Heroes sent out a face oil and if you are using the products they send daily, you were most likely ready for a new face moisturizer. Both my sister and best friend subscribe and they were both asking if we were getting a new face oil soon – so perfect!
The Beauty Drops PM is actually a new formula for Skin Owl. And it’s a pretty cool story about how it came about. Skin Owl founder Annie Tevelin struggled with acne and skin imbalances until a vacation to Vietnam where she discovered the benefits of mangosteen fruit. This fruit transformed her skin and she headed home, enrolled in a cosmetic chemistry program and developed a skincare line to achieve the results she experienced abroad. She did and it worked. BUT just this past year she learned that some of the mangosteen she was sourcing was becoming unsustainable and she decided to lay her mangosteen formula to rest.
So when one door closes, another one opens. Annie traveled, tested and landed on maqui berry as her new star ingredient. Maqui berry is a native superfruit of Chile. It has a high concentration of delphinidins – a type of polyphenol that delivers anti-inflammatory benefits – and it has proven to help calm acne, rosacea and hyper-pigmentation when applied topically or taken internally. Now, I don’t know about you but when I read that it made me want to go buy a bag of maqui berries and eat the crap out of it.
I also LOVE the ingredients here:
- Raw, organic, cold-pressed African Adansonia digitata (Baobab) Oil
- Pure Aristotelia chilensis (Maqui Berry) Oil
- Vanilla planifolia (vanilla) CO2 extract
- Citrus reticulata (tangerine) Oil
That’s it! Baobab is the base or carrier oil here and it’s also super active. Baobab is known for it’s calming, clearing, nourishing and softening effects. This oil goes on smooth and assimilates really well. It’s a great PM moisturizer because it leaves skin feeling super hydrated. This is all great but I have to say one of my favorite things about this oil is THE SMELL! Vanilla and tangerine!? A beautiful, mood boosting scent profile that has me looking forward to bedtime.
The Beauty Whip is so versatile, you can use it as a mask, a moisturizer, a primer or a treatment for extra hydration. I tried it every way I could think of and my fave is using it as a moisturizer. It’s a whipped formula so it’s similar to a lotion in consistency. It’s also a treat if you store it in the fridge and apply it cool. Check out the ingredients:
Just a couple points of clarification. You will see emulsifying wax used here. Some emulsifying waxes are ethoxylated meaning when chemicals are processed using ethylene oxide it can be contaminated with a bi-product of 1,4 dioxane; both of which are carcinogenic. This one is not. It also has MSM which is used to build connective tissue and DMAE for anti-aging. Plus it is stacked with antioxidants from maqui berry, rooibos and green tea.
We get the deluxe size which is $28 but the full size retails for $64 at the Beauty Heroes store.
