the BALM diggity: organic face balms

February 20, 2017

You may be wondering what the heck is a face balm and you may also be thinking there is no way I’m rubbing a Vasoline type substance on my face but hear me out!

Balms are typically an oil based salve which contain no water (and therefore no synthetic preservatives) and can be used for intense moisturizing, removing makeup, improving skin health and more.

I’ve rounded up some balms that I am currently loving. Each one has a uniqueness about it that has me coming back for more.

Bless Beauty Balm by Leahlani Skincare

Bless Beauty Balm by Leahlani Skincare, $48

If you are new to balms, look no further than Leahlani’s Bless Beauty Balm. Leah says you can use this moisture melt as a makeup remover or a moisturizer. I was skeptical to use it as a moisturizer at first because the thought of slathering a thick salve on my face before bed was giving me anxiety BUT all of my apprehension was dissolved with the very first swipe from jar to cheek. This literally feels like a mask of water applied to my skin, it goes on thin and brings the most hydration out of any moisturizer I’ve ever used. Not only that but I wake up with a holy grail face: smooth, hydrated, plump, soft skin. Legit, like a baby’s bum.

Free from water, wax and emulsifiers, Bless Beauty Balm is made with organic shea and cocoa butters as well as cold pressed beauty oils. This is my can’t live without product this winter!

I love it for: overnight hydration and liquid foundation/creams makeup prep. Get yours at Leahlani Skincare!

Nourish Night Balm by Organic Bath Co.

Nourish Night Balm by Organic Bath Co., $48

Okay if you are a New Englander, there is no way you are surviving winter without this gem. This balm breaks out the big guns when it comes to hydration and skin repair. Nourish Night Balm includes organic Rosehip Oil which has been clinically proven to repair, protect, regenerate and hydrate. It also calls on organic Tamanu Oil which clears and prevents blemishes, helps reduce the appearance of scars, clams, soothes and deeply moisturizes. (You can read more about these ingredients on the RAW IS EVERYTHING website – they have some interesting cited studies and empirical data). One layer of this at night and say goodbye to chapped, dry, raw, chaffed face, lips and cheeks. (If you don’t bring this on your ski trip, you are crazy).

A little goes a long way here so you can layer and build until you get the amount of moisture you want. I am obsessed with the smell of this oil. A true coffee freak, the addition of Green Coffee Oil is B.A.N.A.N.A.S.

I love it for: overnight hydration, spot treatment for dry/chapped cheeks, lips and noses, rubbing the extra into my hands for an intense hand treatment. Buy it at Organic Bath Co.!

Maya Chia’s Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm

Maya Chia’s Waterless Wonderbalm, $42

You haven’t lived until you have experienced the magic of this balm! The Waterless Wonder Balm uses the highest quality natural, organic and wildcrafted ingredients from all over the world. My favorite ingredient here is their Supercritical Chia Oil. Maya Chia has a patent on extracting chia oil with CO2 (one of the cleanest extraction methods) – which means you won’t find chia seed oil as close to its natural state anywhere else in the US than you do here in the Maya Chia line.

This balm goes on like BUTTA. Love keeping this in my purse for an anytime, anywhere application.

I love it for: all day long for my lips, as a spot treatment on my face, chapped noses, for my cuticles and heels and for my kids cheeks and noses. Shop The Waterless Wonder Balm here but just do yourself a fave and buy the whole line.

Aurora by Stark Skincare

Aurora by Stark Skincare, $40

If you have been following Stark, this is their reformulated Grapefruit Cleanse + Hydrate Balm – a green beauty cult fave! If you haven’t, let me fill you in. This coconut oil based balm smells like chocolate and oranges and will have you drooling before you can say Stark-it-to-me.

I love love love this balm as a makeup remover. Massaging a small amount into your face with your fingers will take this balm from a solid to an oil state and gently work to remove all the day’s grime, makeup, dirt and impurities while relaxing you with it’s sweet chocolate scent.

Stacked with antioxidant-rich plant oils and butters, this balm can also be used overnight as a moisturizer and you can even bump it up by adding some additional face oil to the balm before applying. My fave ingredient here is turmeric essential oil which promotes new cell growth and stimulates blood circulation.

I love it for: makeup removal. Find it at Stark Skincare!

Magic Organic Apothecary’s The Green Balm from The Choosy Chick

MOA’s The Green Balm, $16.95

The first thing that struck me about The Green Balm is all of its recommended uses check this out:

  • Calm itchy and dry skin
  • Help soothe minor cuts, blisters, bruises and burns
  • Zap pesky insect bites and stings
  • Treat chapped lips, nostrils and coldsores
  • Combat Athlete’s Foot
  • Calm skin after shaving, waxing or threading
  • Help fade stretch marks
  • Anti-bacterial to sooth new tattoos or piercings
  • Moisturizer for hands, nails and cuticles
  • Removing makeup

Say WHA!? Seriously, what does this balm NOT do?! Okay, that being said, I have to be honest, I haven’t tried this for anything except makeup removal because I was hooked after trying it just once. Massage about a dime size amount of balm into your face and eyes to loosen makeup then warm the included cloth with water, wipe over your face and watch the makeup fall off. This cloth is crazy silky smooth too – so soft, I love it. Even if you don’t wear makeup try this to cleans your face at night and you will be amazed at the grime it removes.

The secret ingredient here is yarrow which has been used for centuries to sooth and promote healing and MOA actually sows their own. I did want to mention this formula does contain soy. MOA uses a non-GMO soybean oil that is harvested in the UK, France and Holland.

I love it for: makeup removal.

True Botanicals Body Balm

True Botanical’s Body Balm, $125

[March 2018 update: This balm is now discontinued] Okay if you are loving the idea of face balms and want something for your body too, look no further than True Botanicals Body Balm. This is fantastic applied anytime but especially right out of the shower. It it a beautiful consistency and remains in a solid state until you touch it then it melts into a decadent oil. It goes on smooth and leaves no greasy aftermath – straight up bougie. It’s a decadent treat and would make a fabulous Mother’s Day gift. My fave scent is the Sandalwood + Frankensnece but the Rose + Neroli is a close second!

I’m really loving the Farmacy balm! I don’t have other balms to compare it to, but I love how it melts on my face (like butter but not greasy!) and takes my makeup off so easily. It also has a very light key lime type scent that I adore and I’m picky about smells.
I also just heard about the new pixi double cleanse so I may put that next on my list.

Awesome! Keep us posted! I haven’t tried either of those!
