TOG on OBC – Product Review

August 9, 2016

Little did I know when I attended last year’s The W.E.L.L. Summit that I was attending THE networking event of a lifetime. I was just getting my feet wet playing around with social media; my Instagram page was only weeks old and This Organic Girl blog was not even born yet.

It was here that I got the chance to meet Gianne Doherty who was just named “2016 Wellness Guru” by The Improper Bostonian. She is the brains behind The W.E.L.L. Summit, a two-day program bringing experts in beauty, eating, fitness and lifestyle together for an out-of-this-world wellness conference. And she is also the founder of Organic Bath Co.

Organic Bath Co. (OBC) is a small batch, handcrafted skin care line formulated here in Boston, MA. Gianne and her partner founded OBC in 2014 when Gianne started braking out in hives from the use of conventional products.

My promise to myself as well as to you, is that Organic Bath Co. will only use ethically sourced, organic ingredients in all of our products. We vow that we will only use top quality and when applicable, food-grade ingredients. – Gianne

Now that’s my kind of company. It is so important to use clean, organic and nontoxic personal care products to maintain health. Last year at The W.E.L.L Summit we got the chance to listen to Kathryn Rodgers, research assistant at nonprofit Silent Spring, talk about the dangers of toxin exposure.

One of the examples that Kathryn gave was Silent Spring’s recent research on parabens. Parabens are used in beauty products like shampoos, lotions and makeup. They are used to extend shelf life and you will see them listed as butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben for example. Silent Spring conducted a recent study where they grew breast cancer cells in a lab and exposed them to low doses of paraben and heregulin (a growth promoting substance that is normally found in breast tissue) and the breast cancer cells needed 100x LESS amount of paraben to stimulate cancer cell growth than seen in previous studies. These low doses are what we are seeing in everyday personal care products like your body wash, moisturizer, diaper cream, laundry, detergent, deodorant, shaving gels, toothpaste etc.

The mission of This Organic Girl is not to use scare tactics, whistle-blow or use up space to create negative buzz about issues or products. I created TOG to share healthier options and to bring awareness to the marketplace so people can make informed decisions about what they are buying and using on themselves and their children.

Enter Organic Bath Co. Talk about healthy, clean, safe and luxurious – OBC wrote the book. Gianne sent me a bunch of goodies to try and I have to say they were each amazing in their own way.

The Scrubs

Organic Body Scrubs: Oh my gosh. By far my fave OBC product is their scrubs. First of all they smell AH. Mazing. The Java Jolt explodes with coffee and mint, it is such a beautiful smell and its like the best wakeup call you could ever imagine. The base of the scrub is Fair Trade Certified sugar and Fair Trade Certified coffee. I love sugar scrubs because they do their job and finish by melting away instead of over-exfoliating. This scrub is especially notable because it calls on the perfect balance of certified organic sweet almond oil and certified organic sunflower oil to leave skin with just the right amount of moisture. Exfoliation and hydration in perfect synergy. I tend to go barefoot during the day and I have been loving this on my feet a couple times a week – the perfect antidote to “summer feet” as my friend Jess calls it.  At 9.6 oz, this is a generous portion too – makes a great gift or a killer treat for yourself.  A must try! 27.00/9/6oz

OBC has a ton of scrub scent profiles too – check them out here!

Face Oil and Oil Cleanser

Rice Bran Cleansing Oil: Okay so by now you all know how much I love a good oil cleanse and this one did not disappoint. Two or three pumps in your hands to work into your face and neck at night will take off any makeup or grime from the day. Wipe off with a dry towel or with a warm wet towel and face is left clean and moisturized. The oil passed my “towel test.” I did two rounds of oil cleansing. The first one left my towel black and the second round left my white towel white meaning there was no dirt left on my face to take off from round one. This is all you need to do to wash your face but I personally prefer to follow-up my oil cleanse with a mild cleaner. (Recently I have been loving OSEA’s Ocean Cleansing Mud).

This oil has a light citrus scent and is made with Rice Bran Oil to fight signs of aging, Vitamin E and Camellia Seed Oil to deliver fatty acids, Grapeseed and Sweet Almond to moisturize and sooth with Manuka Oil to keep skin clear.

It is hand crafted in small batches and packaged in a dark bottle with a pump top to protect the integrity or the oils which will start to break down when exposed to heat or light. This product is made with 100% certified organic oils and is a steal at 39.00/100ml.

Enhance Face Oil

Enhance Face Oil: This is a medium weight oil and I have been loving this as the newest member of my nighttime routine. Made with Passionfruit Oil, Blackberry Seed Oil, Organic Cranberry Seed Oil, Acai Berry Oil, Organic Red Raspberry Oil, Organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil, Watermelon Seed Oil, Organic Sacha Inchi Oil and Organic Essential Oil, you can check out the benefit of each ingredient here.

Gianne created this face oil as something for people to use for nourishment when they are feeling beautiful. So many products out there are created with a message of “You are not enough. You need to fix your lines, you need to fix X, Y and Z.”

Packaged in dark glass with a push pump, this product delivers a huge dose of moisture and nourishment. It has nutty notes and is a deep lemon color. My skin feels so full and plump with every application and I never have to reapply. My skin responded really well to it after a long beach weekend in the sun when my skin needed just a little more attention – I sometimes wonder where it has been my whole life.  59.00/30ml

Body Wash

Organic Body Wash: HELLO! Speaking of parabens, loving these paraben-free, sulfate-free, organic body washes. So many great things about these. First, at 16oz there is a ton of product here. I got to try Stress Less which has a mellow lavender scent, Zesty Morning which is spunky and citrusy and Naked which is fragrance-free. They have a wonderful fragrance without being overbearing and they suds up really nice. My absolute favorite thing about these washes though is with the addition of organic coconut, organic olive oil and organic jojoba oil, skin is left feeling not only clean but smooth and moisturized as well. These washes are a real treat to use and they get the job done – without employing chemical toxins. The kids and hubs like them too. 20.00/16oz

Drenched Organic Body Butter

Drenched: If you are looking for a serious hand, foot, elbow, knee – or any dry patch on your body treatment – look no further than Drenched Organic Body Butter. This is a whipped formula, white in color, airy and delivers some serious hydration. Love using this for my hands and feet before bed – I wake up to soft, supple and smooth skin. This product is 100% organic and made with Shea Butter, Sunflower Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil and Sweet Almond Oil. It goes on so rich and assimilates within minutes. With no greasy after party – honestly, it feels a little like magic to me. Easy to say this moisturizer has claimed top spot.

OBC gives us some nontoxic, luxurious options for self care but they actually give more than that. They promise to donate portions from each sale to 1% Percent for the Planet which helps give money to sustainably-oriented non-profits and the Global Soap Project which provides hygiene products to people through NGO partnerships all over the world.
