Trader Joe’s Picks

March 2, 2016

I had a few extra minutes to myself today so I decided to hit up Trader Joe’s for some organic frozen cauliflower rice but -story of my life- they were out of stock.  So this is what I picked up instead:

FullSizeRender 2
  • 5lb bag of organic white potatoes
  • 3 packs of grass-fed Kerry Gold butter
  • 100% grass-fed whole milk plain organic yogurt
  • 2 packs of raw organic almonds (mostly to make almond milk)
  • organic dried banana chips (organic bananas, organic coconut oil, organic evaporated came juice)
  • organic dried mango
  • whole grain organic brown rice cakes
  • organic ketchup (organic tomato puree, organic sugar, organic white vinegar, salt, organic onion power and organic spices)
  • 2 organic navel oranges
  • 4 conventional avocados
  • organic brown rice pasta (organic brown rice and water)
  • Total: 52.50
What I passed on:

Any organic processed foods like frozen pizzas, frozen burgers, frozen pre-made meals and salad dressings. Check the labels on these prepped foods. They often have undesirable non-organic additives like carrageenan, gums, cornstarch, citric acid, enzymes, flavors, seasonings and most of these contain MSG.

In addition to this, most of their processed foods are prepped with two ingredients I tend to avoid: canola (which is refined at a high heat and typically has chemicals added to it to degum etc.) and soy (which has been shown to mimic estrogen in the body and is 99% GMO in the US).

Their organic eggs and organic chicken aren’t my first choice because I like to know the chicken I’m eating got outside but even the USDA organic certification process does not guarantee this. That being said, in a pinch I will buy these. It’s not the best but it’s not the worst either.

All of their non-organic packaged foods, nuts, fruits and veg although I do sometimes buy non-organic produce off the EWG’s Clean 15 list like the avocados I bought today.

What I was hoping to buy but they were out of:

Organic frozen cauliflower rice which is an awesome substitution for regular rice if you are trying to go grain-free or add more veg to your diet.  They said I could call in the morning and reserve some packages because they only get 24 a day and they always sell out by 12:00pm. Great to keep in the freezer to have on hand. Early bird gets the worm here!

I actually saw an empty slot for organic 100% grass-fed ground beef for $7.49/lb and I was so bummed they were sold out!

What I would also buy but didn’t need today:

Organic coconut oil (which is the cheapest I’ve seen around), organic fruits and veg, organic frozen fruits and veg. Organic popcorn, grains, coconut flakes and flowers.

I usually feel limited at TJs because I find that they don’t have that many organic options which is a bummer because they are so affordable. But they do have a few gems like the cauli rice and coconut oil so I try to stop in once a month or so to see what I can score.

What are some of your TJs favorites? I need to add to my list!
