True Botanicals Review: Grove

True Botanicals Grove

By now you guys know I am absolutely in love with the True Botanicals line. Every product I try; I love. Luxury, effectiveness and integrity is the name of True Botanicals’ game. They make my FAVE shampoo and conditioner and I absolutely adore their Hydrating Cleanser and Nutrient Mist and don’t even get me started on their Body Balm – this line makes me weak in the knees just talking about them. By the way, did you know they just launched in Barneys this past year?

The fact that they are crossing over reminds me of listening to Tara Foley [owner of Follain green beauty stores in NY, MA and DC] speak at last years W.E.L.L. Summit – she said something that totally stuck with me; “My hope is that green beauty becomes ubiquitous to the point that there is no longer a need for my shop and we are put out of business.” And it’s starting! This year Barneys, next year THE WORLD!

We are creating a demand for nontoxic beauty by forgoing toxic drug store brands and turning to nontoxic brands like True Botanicals that are not only safe to use but are a true sensory experience. There are so many beautiful things about this line:

  • Responsible packaging
  • A high concentration of high quality ingredients
  • MADE SAFE Certified
  • Results driven performance

Their signature scent is called Fresh and its oh so outstanding – it’s like an etherial pine that is enticing to both men and woman with scents notes of citrus, ylang ylang, sweet violet and mimosa. True Botanical’s scent profile is a highlight that makes this line standout: refined, elegant and understated. And guess what. There is a new scent on the True Botanicals block and her name is Grove.

True Botanicals Grove

I got the chance to ask founder Hillary about the inspiration for this new scent and this is what she had to say:

All of our scents are intended to be evocative of the experience of being in nature, which is so integral to our brand. While our original scent Fresh evokes the crispness of a dewy meadow at dawn, Grove is more of a grounded, forest-inspired scent. A lovely mix of citrus and wood, it it designed to evoke a walk through a California citrus grove.

True Botanicals sent me their Nourishing Lotion and Nourishing Wash both in Grove to try and lets just say: head over heels. When I first took these out of the box I couldn’t stop smelling them. The scent is so beautiful but understated enough that it leaves you hanging and coming back for more. After a million whiffs, I smell hints of orange, sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, lavender and vanilla with a deep woodsy undertone.

Nourishing Lotion

True Botanicals lotion

For anyone out there who just needs a lotion. This is it! I am a huge fan of body oils because they are free from preservatives and if you use one that is formulated correctly it will not only nourish your skin but assimilate on impact. BUT that being said there is always a time and a place for a lotion and I have to say this is one of the best clean lotions I’ve used. It LITERALLY soaks right in, leaves skin feeling super soft and smells fantastic. This lotion is a medium weight but goes on light as a feather and moisturizes like the best of them.

True Botanicals uses Phenethyl alcohol and Ethylhexylglycerin as a preservative system. Both are Ecocert, paraben-free and they score a 1 (out of 10) on EWG. You can check out the full ingredient list on the True Botanicals website.

Also if you are just transitioning to green beauty and nontoxic products – start by switching out your lotion! Unlike soaps, shampoos and toothpaste which are rinsed and discarded, lotion sits on the body and enters your bloodstream bringing along everything with it. Make sure it’s a clean lotion like True Botanicals that is free from parabens, PEGs, SLS, fragrance, petrolatum, formaldehyde, synthetic dyes, BHA, DEA, MEA, TEA…I mean the list goes on and on.

This lotion is great for the entire body including knees and elbows but the selling point for me was my hands. So many lotions I can’t use on my hands because it leaves them too greasy but this one – this formula leaves hands moisturized, soft and DRY! $42

Nourishing Wash

Ture Botanicals wash

Let’s start with what’s NOT to like about True Botanicals Nourishing Wash – um, NOTHING! My skin feels clean and smells great plus because it is a moisturizing wash, it feels SO SOFT too. It doesn’t strip, dry or leave skin feeling squeaky like most foaming soaps will. It comes with a pump (the lotion does too) which is not pictured here but it makes dispensing easy and limits product waste. It foams up which I love and the ingredients are on point, nontoxic and MADE SAFE certified. It’s rich lather comes from decyl glucoside which may sound scary but it is a surfractant (foaming agent) derived from coconuts.

The same preservative system is used for both the Nourishing Wash and the Nourishing Lotion. You can check out Nourishing Wash’s full list of ingredients on the True Botanicals website.

True Botanicals

Founder and president Hillary Peterson started True Botanicals because she took a closer look at her personal care products and saw one thing they all had in common – their ingredients contained toxins. After this wakeup call she threw herself into an eight year study of botanicals and their healing powers plus consulted green chemists and sustainability experts. Her ultimate goal being to formulate transformative skincare products that wouldn’t compromise people’s health or the environment. And she did.

If you are going to try one thing from this line make it their shampoo [for more, check out my True Botanicals shampoo review] but if you are looking to explore this line a little more or to change up your lotion, give Grove a try – it’s gorgeous! This would make a fantastic Mother’s Day gift by the way!

Have you tried the True Botanicals new Grove scent yet? What do you think?
