May 22, 2020 (updated June 22, 2021)

If you are looking for a natural shampoo that works or if you’ve tried EVOLVh in the past to no avail – LISTEN UP. Stop the madness and the greasy hair dramatics and look no further than the new and improved EVOLVh haircare line. These are my top picks.

EVOLVh has been on my radar for a few years now. I was originally drawn to their WonderBalm Magic for Curls to style my waves. I grabbed a range of products to try and when I opened them at home the scent knocked me off my feet. It was so strong.

Well fast forward a few years and they are back and better than ever. They’ve actually reformulated updating their scent profile to a complex blend of essential oils, switched out some ingredients for biodegradable ingredients and also updated their packaging to recyclable packaging and packing materials.

Are EVOLVh products organic?

EVOLVh is now free of sulfates, gluten, parabens, propylene glycol, silicones, phthalates, petroleum products and GMOs. It’s also not tested on animals, it’s vegan and made in the USA.

EVOLVH also meets ECOCERT requirements, COSMOS requirements, it’s Soils Association Approved, NaTrue Approved and Global Approved.

All of this to say, you are in good hands with EVOLVh. If you tried them pre-2019 and didn’t like the experience, I promise you it’s worth another try!

My EVOLVh Faves

Okay, here’s the truth. If it were a life or death situation and I had to pick just one favorite from EVOLVh, I literally couldn’t. It’s a 100% tossup between their SuperFinish Polishing Balm and their UltraShine Moisture Shampoo. Let’s start with the Polishing Bam.

Fave #1: Polishing Balm

Historically, there’s been a HUGE gap in the clean beauty space and it goes by the name of heat protectants for hair. They just didn’t exist. And then last year they started trickling in with one from Josh Rosebrook, Innersense, and this one from EVOLVh. I’ve tried all three of these and by far my top pick is EVOLVh’s Polishing Balm. Check out all the things it does:

Defrizzes, adds moisture, softness, shine, strength, prevents breakage, splitting AND provides UV and heat protection. I know. I KNOW!

But the best part, and why I love this formula so much, is it does all of this without adding weight or texture to my hair. This is a water-based formula that you layer in before blowdrying that just disappears into my strands. In some ways, it’s like adding everything and in other ways, it’s like adding nothing.

Okay I know I said that was my favorite part but really my favorite part is it truly leaves my hair so shiny and soft. I’m like, What is this? VELVET?!

The other thing I want to point out is this is actually a UV protectant too which is #essential for anyone with gray hair. Gray hair turns yellow or brassy from many factors including heat styling, medications, product buildup, salt, chlorine, environmental pollutants, and…SUN! So layering this in before blowdrying and hitting the streets has become mandatory for me. More on how to take care of gray hair here.

Fave #2: Ultra Shine Moisture Shampoo

Okay my second favorite (which is actually a tie for first place with the Polishing Balm) is their Ultra Shine Moisture Shampoo.

There are really only a couple of shampoos that work to truly clean my hair. EVOLVh’s Ultra Shine Moisture Shampoo is one of them.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are several clean beauty shampoos that work “fine” but with EVOLVh it’s like I’m back in the 90’s shampooing my hair in complete and utter ingredient-ignorance-bliss. You know, before I knew the real deal about conventional shampoos and the impact they can have on our planet and our health.

That’s how good this formula cleans. It’s like I can’t even tell the difference. There is no sacrifice. No grin and bare it. No 6 rounds of washing. No greasy nape. Nothing! Just clean, fresh, awesome smelling hair.

All four of their shampoos works great for me. I just happened to like the UltraShine Moisture Shampoo because my gray hair is a little dryer than my brown hair. I also am partial to its fresh grapefruit scent. They also have shampoos specifically for curly hair, color treated hair and their newest shampoo designed to add volume.

Not only is the UltraShine Moisture Shampoo free from nasties, it’s jacked up with nourishing antioxidants and amino and fatty acids like rose hip, seaweed extract, sunflower oil and willow bark to nourish hair.

They even have minis of the UltraShine Moisture Shampoo so you can try a small sample before investing in the full size…

I also like their conditioner although it is water-based and very light. It’s nowhere near a hair mask or a deep conditioning treatment. I do like that it does not add any additional weight to my hair but I also do feel the need to do a conditioning mask a couple times a month to compensate.

More EVOLVh faves…

Best part? You can check out BOTH of these products in their Smooth Discovery Kit which includes minis of both the UltraShine Moisture Shampoo AND SuperFinish Polishing Balm all for $29 – even less if you use my code.

Outside of my top two faves, I am dying to get my hands on their new UltraFlex Hairspray – another huge gap in the clean beauty industry. The description says “strong hold”….I’ll be the judge of that – haha!

9/20/20 UPDATE: I tried their UltraFlex Hairspray and it did NOT hold for me.

So those are my two EVOLVh faves. Code THISORGANICGIRL will save you 15% sitewide on your first order.

When you use the polishing balm, do you use another styling product too? and do you use it when you style your hair curly and straight, or just straight? I have loose curls and while i have a good amount of hair, it’s fine. I usually just use. a diffuser but do blow dry it straight once in awhile. My hair could def use some moisture that doesn’t add weight!

I tried 3 different clean brands before finding evolve, I tried the minis thinking that I would end up not liking it like the others but hooray, it is perfect for my hair!

Thanks for pointing out that they changed their fragrance. I bought sample sizes years ago, I didn’t like the scents nor did they work well on my thick curly hair. Because of your endorsement I’ll try them again, specifically the Wonder Balm for Curls and the Polishing Balm. Thanks for the discount!

Awesome Jacqueline! Let me know how you like them! The SuperFinish Polishing Balm is a FAVE of mine!

I’ve been using natural products for 15+ years and this is seriously the best shampoo and conditioner I have used. I bought the samples based on this review and then the full sizes. They smell like a shampoo and conditioner I used in the 90s but I can’t remember what it was! Anyway, thanks!!

I just have to thank you for your review on the polishing balm. That stuff is AMAZING! I love it. If only they sold it by the vat….

Hi! Do you know if they redid their packaging when they reformulated? I bought the UltraShine conditioner and it has a pretty strong fragrance. It was purchased through a third party, not directly from the Evolvh site and I wondered if it was possible that I could have the old formula. The packaging looks like what you pictured in your post…

Hi! I’m not so sure about the packaging. The old fragrance was INTENSE, the new one, depending on what you buy is way more mild. The UltraShine Moisture Shampoo smells like grapefruit while their SmartCurl smells more floral….hope this helps!

When did they change the scent? I was using this brand and liked it, but ultimately stopped because I could not handle the strong perfumy fragrance when I would spray in the leave in conditioner. I would be willing to try it again though if the scent is toned down.

Hi Wendy! They changed it in 2019…I know what you mean because I also could not use their products before that – the scent was way too strong!

I wanted to tell you that within several days of using this shampoo/conditioner etc. my hair was so dry it started to break off. I lost several inches of my hair and it thinned it out so bad, it looks awful, all my curls are gone! I went in to my stylist and she said it was stripped of all protein and natural oils. I am devestated at how awful it looks and wanted to be sure I told you as an FYI that this can happen so people should be cautious. My hair was VERY healthy before this product and it turned the ends to straw like. I just think women should be aware that this can happen with EVOLVh. I noticed the difference after the first couple of days but thought because it is “all natural” it would be fine, so I kept using it.

Hi Katrina! I am so sorry this happened to you. This sounds awful! I haven’t heard this from any other readers and this has not been my personal experience either. I would encourage you to connect with EVOLVh for more insight. They would have more info in terms of if this has happened to anyone else and/or it could potentially help you figure out if you have a personal allergy to an ingredient they are using…wishing you the best, Lisa
