Welcome to the #CleanOver40 series! I’ve teamed up with my girl Sarah from Whoorl to highlight effective skincare, makeup and lifestyle products that are rocking our forty-something worlds. This series will air the second Monday of every month so check back for the latest. You can also search #CleanOver40 on our blogs to access the entire series. And tag #CleanOver40 on social with your picks. We want to see your faves!

The Conversation That Started It All

And we’re back!!! So excited for today’s post. The Inika Organic B.B. Cream is actually the inspiration that sparked this entire series. As you know, I just turned 40 and Sarah is nearing 44 – we became quick friends not too long ago over our shared love for green beauty, our ability to rationalize the irrational, my jealousy of her closet, gray hair AND ABOVE ALL every foundation, blush, lipstick that was working for her 40-something complexion was totally working for mine too.

For example, one day we sat on Voxer and proclaimed our love for Inika’s Organic BB CreamI just love it. I said. It’s like I don’t want to walk around looking like I’m trying so hard or even like I have foundation on at all. I’m too old for that. I want my natural marks to show through and I want my skin to look naturally radiant and dewy. And the Inika BB Cream does it for me. She goes, ME TOO! And that’s when it came to us: the #CleanOver40 series. I mean let’s be honest, we would basically be doing all the forty-something women of this world a disservice by not sharing! Click here to peep the entire series.

As 40-year-old women, we don’t want the same things we wanted in our 20s and 30s. Not only that, our skin is a lot different than it used to be and our needs have changed. We want a refined, understated, polished and thoughtful look. And so friends, Sarah and I have scoured the green beauty realm. We’ve tried it all. We have a lot of options that we like to use for foundation and B.B. Creams with more options coming out all the time. But these two!? These two are just something special and we continue to reach for them again and again. And the fact that we both picked the SAME FAVES just screams YES! So without further ado…

Foundation V. B.B. Cream

Okay so first thing’s first. Foundation V B.B. Cream. Let’s talk. Foundation is a product designed to even skin tone, correct blemishes and irradiate redness. Depending on the one you choose, it will provide coverage from sheer to heavy but the sheerest is typically still more coverage than creams will provide. The stickler with foundation is you need to make sure you get the correct shade for your skin.

In comparison, a B.B. Cream is used to even out skin tone and reduce redness. It provides lighter coverage than a standard foundation but more than a tinted moisturizer. So many benefits here but one huge one is that the color range is more forgiving. Typically you will only see 2-4 shades of B.B. Cream from one line and that’s because one shade can work for so many skin tones.

So if you are someone who typically wears foundation or likes a medium coverage go with our foundation pick and if you are someone who likes a lighter coverage or maybe you are new to using foundation…maybe you think to yourself…foundation isn’t for me…I’m not used to it…I don’t know how to apply it…I never wear makeup and I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard…whatever it may be; start with this B.B. Cream. You will love it.

Pro Tips

Pro tip #1: Make sure you blend foundation and B.B. Cream down into your neck – there is nothing that looks more odd than an olive face and a white neck.

Pro tip #2: You can apply both of these products with your fingers or a beauty blender but my go-to is a foundation brush. I specifically love a good kabuki. Applying with fingers and then blending with a brush ensures product is applied evenly and gives a beautiful polished look.

Pro tip #3: Make sure to exfoliate your skin 1-2x a week to keep it looking it’s best – no flakes, dull patches or clumpy foundation spots. I love this one and this one.

Pro tip #4: Make sure skin is primed and moisturized before applying. You can use anything from an oil like MUN’s AKNARI to a true foundation primer like Vapour’s Stratus Soft Focus Skin Perfecting Primer. Both are super effective. This will ensure product goes on even and smooth.

Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation

Two words: HOT. DANG. There is nothing to not love about this foundation. First of all, if you don’t know Vapour, they are a high preforming organic makeup line with some of the strictest standards around. They set the industry standard in 2008 when they began formulating and manufacturing in their own facility in Taos, New Mexico. This allowed co-founders Krysia Boinis, a botanical alchemist and Kristine Keheley, a fine artist, to explore color freely, ensure ingredient integrity and provide complete quality control.

All of their makeup is made with at least 70% organic ingredients with the remaining 30% comprised of mineral pigments and essential oils. Vapour truly blurs the lines between makeup and skincare delivering color blends in moisturizing bases that not only enhance natural beauty but nourish skin as well – and boy does it show!

So the Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation is a medium coverage, liquid foundation. Love. Love. Love that it has a dewy finish and leaves skin looking alive and healthy. The goal in our forties is not necessarily to look younger but to look our best and Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation totally does that.

The reason why dewiness in our forties is so important is because as we get older our skin starts to do a few things…it’s effected by a combination of endogenous (genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone and metabolic processes) and exogenous (sun exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals, toxins) factors. These factors together lead to cumulative structural and physiological alterations AKA; thinning skin, fine and deep wrinkles, dry skin, discoloration, laxity, dullness and roughness (source).

So ladies in your forties listen up – put down the powder and matte finish foundations – these accentuate deep and fine wrinkles, play up dullness and highlight skin texture. A dewy finish is really the way to go as we age, it helps skin look alive, vibrant and well, at it’s best. In addition to this, Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation is formulated with brightening Camellia + Frankincense, Tulsi and Lotus to help soothe, calm and protect. Truly a skincare-and-makeup-in-one product.

Overall I love how the Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation goes on thin and truly melts right into skin giving the appearance of your-skin-but-better.  Also love that it’s packaged in glass. No plastic here friends!

INIKA Organic B.B. Cream

Okay if you haven’t heard of INIKA, GIRL, where have you been!? Not only do they make my fave nontoxic mascara but I am also head over heels for their organic B.B. Cream. INIKA was started in 2006 and is is based out of Sydney, Australia. They are 100% vegan, use certified organic ingredients and are cruelty free. I’ve pretty much loved everything I’ve tried from this line (with the exception of their liquid eyeliner) so you know when I saw them at the Natural Products Expo a few weeks ago in Baltimore and I got a chance to meet founder Regis Haberkorn – I had to snap a pic!

The INIKA Organic B.B. Cream contains 80% certified organic ingredients which is higher than the NOP and the Australia Organic Food Chain threshold of 70%. I also love that it has prickly pear oil, pomegranate, avocado and jojoba oils to help moisturize as well. I mean when my makeup also doubles as skincare, I’m ALL IN!

This formula goes on pretty sheer but it JUST WORKS. You can see how my freckles, hyper pigmentation and a few of my broken capillaries show through but it evens out everything just enough to look put together and polished. It doesn’t scream; Hi, my name is Lisa and I wear a ton of makeup. It’s more like; Hi, my name is Lisa. I love my skin.  Don’t you agree? The coverage here doesn’t conceal or hide, it evens skin tone and adds a little radiance. The INIKA Organic B.B. Cream is super natural, breathable and finishes dewy (a little less dewy than the Vapour foundation). Perfect for everyday wear.

Just as an example, the day my sister started wearing this to work, one of her coworkers who she never really talks to, commented that she looked pretty. But you see, they weren’t like, Sweet foundation girl! It’s just one of those things that pulls your look together without being a thing.

You could even use this as a foundation primer. Beige works for me but I can make Honey work too.

It will be easier to get a color match here because one shade will suit several skin tones. AND later this week (possibly starting on Friday) at The Choosy Chick if you buy two INIKA products (I totally recommend this B.B. Cream and their Vegan Long Lash Mascara) then you receive their mini trio kit with a mini blush, mini bronzer and a mini mattifying power – a $25 value – FOR FREE!

AND because I love ya, code THISORGANICGIRL will save you 10% at The Choosy Chick always. Grab your INIKA Organic BB Cream here!

What’s your fave?

What is your go-to foundation or B.B. Cream?

P.S. want to know more about INIKA? I am chatting up their bronzer, eye shadows, lipstick and mascara here.

Just curious if you ever wear both together. Glad to hear your thoughts on Vapour being dewy. I am never sure if I just look oily, especially as my skin is not oily.

Hi Annette! I usually don’t wear both together, one is usually enough but the INIKA BB Cream totally doubles as a primer and you could wear it under the Vapour for sure. Dewy is a good thing! xo

I rarely wear makeup but found the suggestion of skipping the powders enlightening! Curious, however, do you use any sort of finishing product? Do you use liquid blush or bronzer? I find without a finishing powder, my makeup just seems to be gone within a couple hours. When I DO wear makeup, it’s usually for an all day meeting or something and precisely when I don’t want to look like my makeup has slid off my face by 10am. Thanks!

Hi Maggie! Yes! I like RMW UN Powder and W3LL PEOPLE Invisible Powder. Or if you are just trying to reduce shine you can go over your face with a clean brush and that alone will soak up some of the excess. I use both powder and cream blush + bronzer but I prefer cream – it just looks more natural at this age. Let me know if this helps or if you need more recs! xo

Hi Lisa! I tried the Inika, and it burned when I put it on, and I didn’t prefer the scent. I’m sure that’s very unusual. So I’m still looking for a bb or something like it without spf. Have you tried Kosas tinted oil, Lily Lolo BB, or Westman Atelier stick (it says light foundation, so I wondered)?

Hi Brooke! I’m so sorry that happened! I’ve tried the Kosas tinted oil but there is no shade that works well for me. It also seems to settle into the fine lines of my face a bit. I haven’t tried Lily Lolo’s BB cream or the Westman Atelier Stick however I do like the Sappho CC cream…have you tried that?
